Hello! After reading the Wheel of Time series fitfully over the better part of the last decade, I have finally finished the last book and... Wow! Robert Jordan was visionary. Such a detailed world, such well-developed characters. I'm glad I strayed from my typical diet of science fiction to pick up the Eye of the World years ago and so happy to have persevered in reading the series. I am, however, left with a number of questions and look forward to discussing the books with you.

Now, to answer the suggested questions in the stickied thread:

1. My favorite character in the series is Talmanes because he is solid, dependable, educated and well-mannered without being arrogant, and especially because of his wry sense of humor (mine is similar).

2. I found TarValon.net when getting back into the series this summer. The book and character summaries in the Library were quite helpful.

3. I am a graduate student and spend my spare time reading about dead (or imaginary) civilizations and brewing my own beer.

4. My favorite is book is C.S. Lewis' Till We Have Faces. I like it for its beautiful prose and clever twist on a beloved myth, but most of all because of its hauntingly exquisite tale of grief and love, failure and forgiveness.

Cheers.

Welcome, welcome!

(Don't mind the odd avatars and signatures going around right now. We're in the middle of our Shaoman festival and all shall return to normal [or as normal as it gets around here :look: ] at the end of the week.)

Welcome! History and brewing. Sounds like an ace mixture. I don't brew beer, but I love making ginger bugs and cultivating other live cultures for use in drinks and food. Cheers! :beer

:welcome It's good to meet you! I loved Talmanes too, for many of the same reasons.

I share your interest in both dead and imaginary civilizations. :D Ancient History is one of my favorite things to study, and when I wrote my favorite part of the process is when I create new worlds. I even started a free online class yesterday about the history of Egypt in six objects.

Have you read any of Brandon Sanderson's other works? He creates amazing places and cultures for his books. Especially in Way of Kings, the first book in is Stormlight Archives series.

Pleasure to meet you, Trond! You won't run out of folks to talk to about dead civs, real or imaginary, nor do I think you'll run out of guinea pigs for your beer experiments :)

:welcome

Welcome to Tar Valon! :D

And as an Antiquities major, I wholeheartedly approve of this discussion of ancient civilizations. This semester I'm focusing on the Near East, including a class on Egypt.
