This year we asked for submissions for our Feast of Lights charity. Thank you all who send in a nomination! We had such great suggestions this year it was hard to narrow the field down, but in the end we have 3 fantastic charities for you to chose from! They all do really great work internationally and any one of them would be a pleasure to help this FoL/

Ok, on to the charities!
1) Operation Smile - suggested by Miya Kiyoshi and Morrighan Daghdera
Operation Smile is an international children's medical charity that heals children's smiles, forever changing their lives.
As a children’s charity, we measure ourselves by the joy we see on all of the faces we help. At Operation Smile, we're more than a charity. More than an NGO. We're a mobilized force of medical professionals and caring hearts who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate.
Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft — often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can't afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life.
That's where we come in as an international charity providing much needed surgical services. Since 1982, Operation Smile — through the help of dedicated medical volunteers — has provided more than 2 million patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.
As one of the most prominent children’s charities in the world and with a presence in over 60 countries, we are able to heal children’s smiles and bring hope for a better future.
Thanks to the generosity and spirit of volunteerism shown by our supporters, we heal thousands of children per year. With your help, how many lives can we change tomorrow?

At buildOn we run afterschool programs that mobilize urban youth to lift up their communities and change the world through intensive local service and by building schools in some of the poorest countries on the planet. We are a movement of students, educators and communities. We believe in the power of partnerships that passionately act for the common good. Through our programs, people inspire people across neighborhoods, across cities, and across continents to reach and think beyond their realm of possibility.
Our programs unlock the potential of under-resourced communities around the globe. The urban teens and villagers we work with are rebuilding our world by forming a new generation of social leaders. They are our future teachers, business leaders, activists and artists. They are the ones who believe that enough acts of kindness can set the wheels of change in motion.
Students in our Afterschool Youth Service Programs learn about the concerns facing their local and global communities and then contribute intensive service to help solve these issues. On a weekly basis buildOn program members feed the homeless, tutor elementary school children, pay visits to senior citizens, and so much more – all contributing to the success of their neighborhoods. These same teens build schools across the globe by raising money to support construction materials and by travelling to developing nations where they work side-by-side with villagers to construct schools.
buildOn’s Global School Construction Program provides rural communities in developing nations across the globe with access to education. We are breaking ground on a new school every six days with the help of our U.S. afterschool program members, donors and parents who have provided over 700,000 volunteer work days to build schools for their children. Through a methodology that puts gender equality at the forefront and villagers in control, we are providing not only schools, but the knowledge and the power to change entire communities.

Room to Read believes that World Change Starts with Educated Children. We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education that enables them to reach their full potential and contribute to their community and the world.
Our Mission
Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.
