Here in Serbia, you have to pay for a yearly membership to be able to use a library and all it offers. It's not a huge price, especially since it's for a whole year, but it's still paid for. Of course, I am not sure if that is what you meant by "paying money to participate". :look: Plus, you're in the US and I am not, so there are bound to be differences.

Wow, that's fascinating! We have public libraries in the US that are free to use, though at many you have to pay a fine or lose privileges if you don't return your books on time. They also offer a lot of other services beyond reading material, like free internet access, free computer usage, classes, childrens' events, etc. I think most academic libraries here require paid membership to check out books if you're not a student, so maybe that's more similar to your library system in Serbia.

It does sound like it. I know some of our libraries also organise little events, too... But we cannot really use the libraries as reading-rooms, for example - we cannot go in there, pick a book, sit down and read it, not without paying for membership. A lot of libraries have specified "study rooms" for students, but to my knowledge, that is paid for, too. As far as computers go, the ones in the libraries are rather slow for the most part, so that's not that shiny an offer, either. :look:

That's super interesting! I wonder what other differences there are in library systems around the world. Maybe I'll get to take a class on that one day. :geek

Welcome back, Cosima! I like your choice of favorite clone, although I have to admit that mine's probably Helena :pleased-1:
