My first time reading WoT

Well, finished book 2, but have no idea of any suggestions. Something I learnt in book 2: Expect the unexpected...

So some of my thoughts...
I would love to read more from Thom, although we met him in TGH.

I loved the Ogier stedding, and we know more about Rand and the Dragon reborn.

Was thrilled upon the Seanchan, did not expect something like an invasion to Rand-world. Am excited how this will go on, but suprised over all the things happening.

Also my suggestion/assumption with Illian was totally wrong.

I love the changing POVs in this book, although Rand got the most time, we were in different perspectives and RJ let us know more about the different characters.

Re relationships, it is a struggle. Have no idea about the third woman Min saw at Rand's side and assuming that two of them are Egwene and Elaine. Still a bit of hope for Lan and Nynaeve.

Also am still thinking about that man calling himself Bors at the Prologue. And Liandrin is black ajah, for sure. She is only evil, nothing else, I hate her (but it is part of well written books to have someone you hate in it!)

And tbh I watched season 1 of the TV show (because the last few days I was too exhausted to read from my yarn festival). Today is resting day for me, so knitting and listening to The Wheel Weaves and in the evening diving into TDR.

It was good advise to not watch the show until book 2 is over, but am thrilled about the next season, so I have to read on!!!

Not a spoiler, as it is a common theme, but one thing we see more in Season 2 as we learn how the world really works, is just because someone, even an Aes Sedai confidently asserts something as a fact, doesn't mean it is true

It's just a thing with not telling a lie - if you believe that it is the truth, you are not lying...

You're in good company, especially regarding Thom and the Seanchan.

One of the most beloved characters and people can't get enough of, I think for all the right reasons, and this isn't a spoiler, but one thing people have been looking forward to with the Show in particular.

The Seanchan are great as a counterpart to the unambiguous evil of the trollocs in a subversive sort of way. The Wheel of Time as a world where there's monsters and magic and everything, but the greatest evil is still other people.

Yes very much so. However the evil of the dark one and the Seanchan is of course very different. The dark lord and darkfriends only share one thing with the Seanchan (in the bigger picture of course; there are plenty of nuances within the Seanchan) but it is a sort of ruthlessness to accomplish a goal. Which for the dark lord/friends is to achieve breaking the pattern, and for the Seanchan the saving of the pattern. This is where utalitarianism vs consequentialism really comes into play. Is it about the goal, or the road leading up to it? I love that discussion. And to make it more interesting, I don't think there's a solid iron-clad answer. Cause the way of the leaf really appeals to me too

I started book 4 (I have a bit too much time on my hands with my backproblems). I enjoyed the character development. I'll spoiler up to book 2 now from the top of my head I think it's very right that the TV series mention 5 ta'veren instead of 3. So much also revolves around Egwene and Nynaeve also (and later around 3 particular characters too, although you might contribute that to Rand). The introduction of people like Verin, Sheriam and Leane add to the very diverse universe that the white tower is. It is, in fact, not a faction but an eco-system and with the addition of new Aes Sedai characters that's beginning to show. I love how stuff get's depth that way. It makes it a lot more interesting to have grey characters instead of just black and white. Don't get me wrong, I love hating certain absolutely BAD characters, but just that doesn't make a story interesting at all)

There are only 3 Ta'veren, but it really isn't clear, at least at this stage what makes someone Ta'veren, and what makes someone just a person that a lot of strange things happen around. For Rand at least, we see some really odd things happening, such as an entire village deciding to get married in book 2, or a unit of Whitecloaks just quitting, neither of which are things that would plausibly happen (despite the explanation of Ta'veren as just making things more likely), so he is different, but Perrin and Mat? Even in Book one, when they tell Loial what happened, he for some reason decides they must all be ta'veren, rather than just one of them

well I know but some things that happen to them, like how Egwene eventually ends up in Salidar (I'm not mentioning it but I'm sure you know what I mean), it's not at all likely that something like that would happen. It seems very ta'veren to me. And also the developments in Salidar around Nynaeve are rather strong. I know it's mentioned in the books and sort of 'verdicted' by Loial, but I just mean to say: I like that the TV series treat them as 5 ta'veren. I think it suits the situation

Loial is a favorite for a lot of people, you're in good company here.

I don't know why RJ went with there being 3, rather than all 5 (or at least Egwene) being ta'veren, though right from the start, there are suggestioons that the three boys are linked in ways the others aren't. We do have characters who can see Ta'veren - Siuan mentions how strongly Rand shines (though says nothing about the others), and Alar can apparently sense it (though I don't have that reference, I'll have to get it and add to the library)

So I just edited a couple of pages to add those references :look:
Alar, and another that would be a spoilerr

I mean, we literally have the boys seeing visions of what the other ones are doing at some points, so they are pretty inextricably linked.

I really do not like the Ogier in the show - in my head, they are far bigger and far cuter (and I miss the twitiching ears in the show!!) Loial in my POV is sooo sweet and cute, I want to cuddle up in his arms and sleep a whole weekend... ;)
Very much agreed! I like Loial but I miss those nervous ears. And he's definately not big enough. I imagine he must have ears hairtuffs that are a bit like red river hogs, en the twitching sways his ears and ruffles the hairs. I do like the voice, the hair on his head and the solidness he has. Perhaps they made him a bit younger for the show and we'll see bigger Ogier when we get to a stedding

I can't wait until we see other Ogier too, though I imagine that's probably not until at least next season. Getting to see the variety of them will be really cool, and especially if they keep up the same prosthetic choices. Vague spoilers, but I greatly enjoyed when Rand gets to meet some Ogier on Loila's behalf, as it were. Fantastic moment.

Oh whooopwhooopp......

The Amylrin seat is really a force to calculate with. Also she is taking high risks with plotting against her sisters with Moraine and Verin!

But I did not expect to see Nynaeve and Egwene becoming spys of the Amrylin seat. Siuan arguing is logic, they are the only ones being not black ajah for sure, but the resources of Accepted are really small!

Also I would love to read about Egwene going throuch the Archs for being raised to Accepted. I hope to see that in my nearer reading future!

Rand run away and is hunted by Moraine, Lan, Perrin and Loial. Will be intresting to see what else happend around Rand after the village with the dozends of marriages....

Still I am very very pleased to found these books, do not regret to buy all volumes at once and am rushing through (compared with my usual reading time. It is slower than reading German, but I love to dive into these books every evening for 1 or 2 hours.... So if I can keep this, I think I could manage to read through all books by the end of the year... )

I really loved Rand's weird wanderings! The festivals and the marriages and the . . . -ahem- other stuff. I hope Loial takes some liberties there with the writing.

I do love that Rand is also the bard of the books ^_^

So that happend in my world yesterday in the evening....
Spoiler up to chapter 24 TDR

I wonder how
of her visions had to do with Rand....I did not suppose to be her such a "flat" character that she is only swirling around Rand, Dragon Reborn or not...

I spy Sheriam being Black Ajah (and got an accidentally confirmation by Brycc, bc we now have a Discord reading club, horray!), also I was afraid of the ominous storage room. In my opinion, it was not the Amyrlin sending Else, but the Black Ajah. I feared also an ambush in this storage, but that did not happen, phew!!!

Our three ladies found a ton of information about Tear, it is so obvious, I am a little bit disappointed that they did not catch that (like the list of the women being Black Ajah was **too** heterogeneous), so I am wondering why that Black Ajah wants anybody or especially the two (or three, as afaik Elayne participation is not offical) in Tear.

Also we get in Mat's head for the first time, that was intresting. And I wonder why he still speeks the old tongue... And of course wants to leave Tar Valon, too. Maybe he will join the girls?? I will RAFO asap

Btw, I am reading on my ebook reader and until yesterday it told me it would take me more than 280 hours to read the remaining books.... Bub in the evening I rushed through a lot of pages in a row and out of the blue there were only 95 hours left. I suppose I did not take care if I put it away to shut it down correctly, so it needs some time to recognize that I am left and does so automatically, but I do not like that I got rid of about 2/3 of expected reading time.....

I have no idea what they base those estimates on, but I'm troubled that perhaps it's the general low quality of reading comprehension for English readers weighted by the dismal performance of US residents.

I really love how the Wonder Girls handle things though being otherwise out of their depth.
