Almost 200 pages into The Alloy of Law, and I can’t decide if I like this portion of the Mistborn series :\ I can’t exactly figure out why either. The more modern setting may be part of it. The lack of a strong female character at this point may be another part of it. Only references to the original lore instead of it being significantly expanded upon may also be part of it. I usually like banter between characters, but even that is falling short for me. It just doesn’t have the same feel as the original Mistborn trilogy, imo...

I’ve read the short story in Arcanium Unbound and wonder how that affects this portion of the series, though. Is there a significant influence that helps these books, or are there just more references to the original trilogy?

It is definitely different in tone from original Mistborn. I liked Alloy less than the Mistborn cycle, but I did still enjoy it. Also, I'm surprised on your comments about a strong female character. I don't know what 200 pages look like and I hate spoiling things for people so I'll just say that there are some ladies in Alloy that I rather enjoy. Although they aren't as rough-and-tumble as Vin was, they aren't as emotionally traumatized as she was either.

Yes, Vin’s rough-and-tumble nature is what I was referring to. True, one female character has shot a baddie but that’s about it so far.

Gotcha. Yeah, Vin was pretty much one of a kind.

Remember that Mistborn 1.0 was a robbery story, and Alloy is a detective story, only the settings are different than normal lol. So that may be the difference. Mistborn is a grifter style story al-lah Ocean's 11 or The Sting while Alloy is more like Sherlock Holmes or Castle. Also yes there are several female characters to come up in the story ;)

I hope you can finish it. I felt that it eventually got all the things that you currently feel are lacking.
