I would love to learn Old English! Languages are hard for me but it is so interesting how languages morph and pull from other languages down through the centuries.

Thank you for the welcome! I really enjoy translating dead languages. That is in part because I have a terrible time pronouncing other languages, which is why I like ones that are purely written. It really is interesting how languages morph over time.

Old English, for example, is the form of English from the fall of the Roman Empire until the Norman invasion in 1066 CE, when the French Normans invaded, and which generally marks the beginning of Middle English. Originally, it was a Germanic languages and is close enough to modern German that I could understand a little of what my aunt said at family gatherings. When the Normans invaded, the upper class words took French variants while the lower class ones stayed English, like "beef" vs "cow" (see more here), which have persisted until modern times.

In the the extended version of the LotR movies, there are a few different places that Old English is used among the Rohirrim, and even Theoden's speech in Helm's Deep ("Where is the horse and rider?') comes from an Old English poem, "The Wanderer."

I studied language at uni, not a dead one tho! But I did choose Iceland to go to as an exchange student in secondary school because I wanted an edge on learning Old Norse :laugh:
(I planned to study history at uni)

I double majored in English & History originally, and chose to study abroad as well (I spent a summer studying at Wycliffe Hall, one of the Oxford colleges) in part so I could have access to the Bodleian Library. The Roman ruins at Verulamium were fascinating, as was The Kilns (C.S. Lewis’s house).

My cousin was studying abroad a few years after me, and for fun sent me a Christmas postcard that was written in Latin but transliterated to Futhark runes. That took me a good several days to figure out and then translate, lol

Originally, it started with Koine Greek as an undergraduate.

I was raised in a conservative religious household, and grew up going to Southern Baptist affiliated churches. But, I also had an intuitive distaste for the judgmental legalism I was encountering, which frequently seemed to rely on biblical commentaries (usually sold by book of the Protestant Bible in the NASB translation) as proof. I did not necessarily trust career theologians, thinking that they were humans with agendas and who could make mistakes as much as anyone else.

So, I decided to learn to for myself; if I was going to believe it, I should know what it said, not trust the word of someone else who may or may not have a bias to promote.

After two years of that, Latin was next—Loeb Library Classics have these great dual language versions of the writings of Tacitus, Julius Caesar, Cicero, and others. I wanted to read the originals to get the original intent.

By the time I got to my MA, I was actively looking forward to Old English. Again, I’d read Beowulf before, but wanted to know what it really said and what shades of meaning were in the original that I was missing.

Yup. That's about how I wound up converting from Baptist to Eastern Orthodox. :) I never really got SUPER into the Greek, but definitely got bit by a bug for "what does this REALLY say?"

What did you get your MA in? I'm currently in grad school for clinical mental health.

I know many people who left Baptist denominations and found their way to older, more liturgical ones.

My first MA was in English Lit. I an currently working on a second on in Journalism Education. :)

Welcome!! Where abouts in SoCal are you from. I grew up in Huntington Beach but also as an adult lived in Anaheim, Orange, Santa Ana, Tustin, Oceanside and Vista (last two are san diego County vs Orange County) I also lived in Los Osos up near San Louis Obispo and Hanford about 35 minutes south of Fresno. I'm now in Kansas city Missouri area.
