Greetings!

I had come here hoping to find that the tower was more accepting of all gender and sexuality issues. I found that I was wrong, but this was not unexpected. Jordan created a world that used gender in a certain manner and thus the tower here has a similar setting. I think everyone presumed that I was a transgender person. It does not bother me that this was their impression, however, for accuracy's sake, I am a cisgender grrl. I am also a lesbian. I would like to join the tower itself as a novice eventually, but I read the descriptions of the ajahs and found them almost all worded in a very heteronormative fashion. That turned me off right away. The wording itself is non-inclusive. As we are all readers, it seems safe to assume that we all understand how important wording is. Perhaps I'm making too much of it, but if there is little to no deviance from the heteronormative society I already face every day, I don't see why I should join into another.

Regardless, it would be useless to join right now. I've just been confronted by my housemate in yet another drunken tirade (wheeee!!) and this time she screamed herself into such a state of aggression that she threw me out. I may be able to become a citizen of Tar Valon, but in real life I am essentially homeless with little chance of finding another place to live before I am forced to leave. Therefore, I cannot join right now. I'm not even sure I can stay in this country without a proper visa, which I've just lost.

So this is likely the most depressing intro post ever, but I am pleased to find such a large community that I can bond with over the WoT. I'm currently on my 25th reread of the series and it's likely all that's keeping me sane (ha! - you see what I did there, Rand!?). I'd love to stick around but I don't know when I'll be back. I'd love to discuss some topics in the books and read the threads I already see here. Perhaps one day I will be able to actually join the tower. Right now I'm just distracting myself to keep from freaking out about how horribly wrong everything has gone.

So cheers, mes amis! Ahh, if only I had Mat's luck with dice.. or Thom's ability with knives... but it is what it is, hey? I hope this post finds all of you in better circumstances than me. :)

Fox, you have selected another person's avi, as Lireina has posted. I hope you find a home here. Lots of us have had tribulations, but it is the community that keeps us strong. As far as gender roles...stay tuned. We're working on that point. I sincerely hope you stick around & take comfort in the camaraderie. I hope you choose to join & that everything works out in your favor. :hug

edit: nvm, you changed your avi. :D

I appreciate your decision to remind me to change the avi. I was actually looking for one when you posted. You'll understand if it was not the biggest priority in my life just now. I have changed it anyway though. I wouldn't want to upset anyone while I was without internet access outside of Starbucks. Thanks for the encouragement. Cheers.

No one's been upset, Fox - it's just how the rules are. I'm very sorry about your situation IRL, I sincerely hope things work out for you. :/

On another note: 25 rereads of the series? Holy crap that's... massive.

Nothing like a book series to keep you sane. I hope you can check back periodically and soon.

Where are you from originally? I'm originally from Arkansas. I live in Prince George now. I've been in Canada for 7 years now. The first three years I was here, the government didn't believe me when I said that I didn't come to work illegally. Kind of put a crimp in my visa. Applying every two months for an extension of my visitor visa was so annoying! On the plus side, I've been married for five years now to one of the biggest asses on the face of the planet. He's maddening and frustrating, but somehow it works. I'll let you know when I figure out why.

If you ever need anything, send me a message! I can be reached through the boards or the email below. And I do mean *anything.* It doesn't have to be board related at all. I may be 10 hours north of you, but I'm still here. ;)

Welcome to the forum. And so sad to hear about your situation. I have been very close to your situation myself. But luckely i just managed to avoid beeing homeless. Although it is still lurking around the corner. But i have found that there are luckely always people around who are willing to help.
I guess you are in a less fortunate situation then me. Wish i could help you, but the only people in Canada i know live on the other side of the country. And i don't know how willing they would be if i brought them into contact with a complete stranger.
I also understand your concern about the gender issue. But know that the community as a group is very accepting to anyone and everyone. Although yes, we are based on the structure of the white tower as it is in the books.
I wish you the best of luck. And hopefully things will sort out for you as soon as possible.

Hello and welcome. I am terribly sorry to hear of your current situation, and I hope that things work themselves out for you.

I am really impressed by how many rereads you have managed. I've only managed 3.... And I thought that was awesome.
As for gender representation, yes we are set up like the books. This is just like the White Tower was structured with females as channelers and males as warders. However, you will find that in these roles here are people of all sexualities. We do not discriminate or draw up assumptions before we get to know you. Well, at least most of us. I can't speak for everyone. But having been a part of this community going on 12 years, I can honestly say that I have never met a more accepting, kind hearted, and understanding group of people. Some of my closest friends I've met here, and I wouldn't trade them for the world.

And at the risk of sounding naive, what is csigender? I haven't heard that term before. :embarassed:

Welcome to the site! I hope things look up for you, many of us have been through some pretty rough situations in our life but we've made it through, many with the help of the friends and sisters (and bros) we've met here :pleased-1: If you ever need to talk just pm! As far as visas go, try visajourney.com, that was the site I used while my husband and I were struggling with his visa.

Anyhow, I hope you get sorted soon and while tv.net is not your main focus atm, stay positive and you'll make it through! We'll be here :)

A Vancouverian!! :joy

Welcome! I'm hailed from Surrey myself, but then I found a husband here. :look: Welcome to TV.Net! I'm sure you will find your own niche here like so many of us have despite the gender limitations. :hug Its not nearly so black and white despite first appearances.

Cisgender is used as a term to contrast with transgender, usually meaning a person who identifies with their socially assigned gender. That's how I've come to know it, at least. :)

(Cis in Latin means something like "on this side" or "hither".)

Hopefully if nothing else you can find a place to relax here and unwind a little bit. Have to admit I had to look up the cisgender thing myself and still am not sure what exactly it pertains to. Not known anyone on this site to discriminate against others, and sorry if anything we do makes you feel uncomfortable. We are just a quirky bunch of people looking for like minds to spend some free time with. Hopefully you can be one of those minds. :fistbump

Hi, Fox!

Sorry to hear about your housing and housemate troubles! I have a friend who works in a related area that would know of some local resources in Vancouver that might be able to give you a hand or at least some guidance; let me know if you need such resources and I'll scare up some info for you (you can visitor message me from my profile).

For what it's worth, yeah, the site is currently centred around the heteronormative roles described in the books. But there's some major discussion about changing that around in the works! I'd talk to some of our more experienced LGBT members here for the lack of inclusiveness angle and how they feel about it; I'm a bi gal married to a man, so I'm not exactly qualified to make that call. :)
