In the city of Ahnk Morpork, William de Worde made a simple living writing a monthly newsletter to neighbouring royalty and nobility. That is until he meets the dwarf Goodmountain and his crew, who have brought a printing press into the city. Until recently, movable type has been banned in the city, and the dwarves seek to capitalize. William finds himself lumped in with the dwarves by Lord Vetinari, the Patrician of the city, and soon William's newsletter becomes the city's first newspaper, with the help of Sacharissa Cripslock, daughter of William's old engraver, and Otto Chriek, a vampire iconographer with fascination with light.

Meanwhile, the criminal duo of Mr Pin and Mr Tulip arrive in the city, hired by shadowy figures to get rid of the Patrician, with the assistance of a look-a-like they kidnap named Charlie.

Things take an unexpected turn, when suddenly Vetinari is arrested for stabbing his secretary and attempting to flee with thousands of dollars, something William and even Commander Vimes of the City Wafch find hard to believe, despite the evidence. William is sure something is wrong with the situation and seeks to find out what.
