The membership manual about avatars and signatures can be found here. It's much more detailed than this thread so please use it!

About Avatars

•Avatars, or the images we use on our message boards and the Who's Who, must not be currently in use by an active Tower member.
•Avatars must be chosen carefully as changes will not be allowed after the initial selection. An avatar change is only allowed when the artist of the original artwork denies the usage of the avatar; in which case contact Sa'areah Sedai, the Director of Membership at membership@tarvalon.net and petition an avatar change. Also, check out the post below for helpful information on artists.
• Only GIF and JPG formats are allowed.
• Avatars must be exactly 110x170 pixels. No exceptions
• Animated avatars are not allowed.
• Members must have the artist's permission to use an avatar if the image is not in public domain. It is solely the user's responsibility, and TarValon.Net does not take responsibility for any avatars used by its members. If it is brought to the attention of the administration that a user is using an image illegally, the user will be asked to comply with the wishes of the artist.
• Also, there are other guidelines concerning avatars:
o All avatars should be human.
o The avatar shouldn't have broad frames.
o No obscenity is tolerated.
o No real life pictures unless it is your own

About Signatures
• Signature blocks must not be excessively wide, nor should they be excessively long or possess flashing logos or scrolling text.
• Banners must be in GIF or JPG format.
• Signature blocks may not exceed 450x100 pixels.
• There may be up to 2 lines of text in a signature with a banner. For the record, a space between text lines or between your text line and your signature counts as a line of text.
• Text-based sigs shall be no more than 10 lines.
• The use of a few small, personalized emoticons is allowed.
• Lines including emoticons count for 2 lines.
• It is important to remember that some artists do not like their artwork being used for any reason without permission. It's not a requirement to ask at ALL times, but be aware that you may be violating copyright rules and be asked to remove certain images (see Avatar rules).

Is there an easier way to see which avatars are being used besides clicking on each individual person in the who's who?

Didn't the signature guidelines change a while back, to allow for bigger (wider?) images? Or did I imagine that, or perhaps confuse TV.net with some other site?

I'd like to make an avatar using a computer game's character creation engine. Is this legit? I don't think it would count as copyrighted, but I find it kind of hard to tell these days.

So, just to be clear, what I'm referring to is, if you play a game like Dragon Age (for example) there is a pretty detailed character customization screen where you can make an avatar look however you want (change facial features, hair/eye color, shapes of features, etc). Seems like a good way to get a picture that I want without having to search forever or to worry about stealing someone's hard work, but I definitely don't want to break any rules.:brown-blink:

I think as long as you have created the image it's acceptable as an avatar. Many people have avatars that have been created by others through graphics programmes.

Just make sure the size is correct as per guidelines.
