Hi. I'm Riley. My job is to keep track of our funds for our community, and to make sure they're put to good use. To do this, well, we need funds.

Each summer, around this time, we ask our members to give back to the community in the form of donations. We are one of the only Wheel of Time communities on the World Wide Web to completely, one hundred percent, member funded. If you look to the side of your screen, or at the top, or at the bottom, you'll see something pretty amazing. Or, actually, what you don't see is pretty amazing. What you don't see are ads. We don't sell ad space. We never have. We don't want to. If I have my way, we never will. We do not require a monthly/quarterly/yearly subscription. Again, if I have my way, we never will. Frankly I LOVE that we are a large enough community to make it onto the dust jackets of the books we love, and we are still, completely and utterly, member funded.

Think about the time you've spent here. Have you found a good friend? Someone you can tell anything to? Someone you know will support you through thick and thin? Let me ask you this... How much is that worth? For myself I know I've found some of the best friends I will ever have through this community. Others have found husbands, wives, soulmates. I feel like I've found brothers and sisters that I never even knew existed. Again, how much is that worth? A better question though.... is how much can you pay for that? And where would you go to do that?

To nuts and bolts.... where does your money go? It goes toward server space. The larger we get, the more we buy, and it is well worth it. Some of you may remember there towards the end of November things were happening slowly when our pages loaded. WE were too big for the bandwidth we had at that time. We paid to increase it, because making our member web experience as smoothe as possible is a priority. Along those lines some exciting changes are coming to TarValon.net. We are changing from a phbb run format to vBulletin. I'm not well versed in all the technical aspects, but I trust our tech people when they tell us it will be beneficial for us. Along with this, we will possibly be able to create and run a mobile site, for use with smartphones and other mobile devices, as well as our own ap to run it. How exciting is that? This is what your donations go towards.

In the past, when we wanted to have a real-life event, we had to figure our costs, and start taking payments before we could even book our venue. This lead to some... memorable... events. Like the Great Flood of Chicago. We no longer have to do that. We are able to put deposits on our venues up to a year in advance, to create events that are memorable not for the disasters, but for the things that make our community grow stronger. Your donations go towards this. I realize not all of you are able to attend events, but did you know that our ability to organize and implement events where our members get to see each other face to face is one of the defining characterisics of our community? One of the things that make us stand apart from the other communities? Even if I never went to events, I would be awfully proud of that.

Our goal for this year is $4000. This is roughly half of our operating expenses per year. Why only half? Because we do have other avenues of fundraising available to us. Now, I understand that there are those of us who really cannot afford much. That's okay. You don't have to give much. I promise you every dollar counts, and each dollar is appreciated as much as every other dollar.

Let's look at this from a couple of different angles: When I look at the boards, I see something like 140 active members. I know we have more than that that are lurkers, aren't really active, etc. If 200 of us gave $20 each.... we have our goal. $20 may be a good bit of change, but how much do you spend on other forms of entertainment? $5 cups of coffee from Starbucks can add up. Going to a movie in a theater these days can be more than $10 per person. Pay per view movies on cable are around $4. I would ask you to consider if you can give $20 for the time you get here, connecting with other fans of these great books, building friends, finding new family members. If you can't afford that... What can you afford? Again, what is it worth to you?

Enough begging for money. LEt me give you some information on how to go about doing it, if you would like to.

You can send payments online, through Paypal to:

payments@tarvalon.net

You can send checks or money orders through the mail to:

TarValon.net, Inc.
33 El Prado Dr
Edgewood, NM 87015

If you are not comfortable sending payments through the mail, or do not have access to paypal, we do have a few options available to you. Just contact me at shatayan@tarvalon.net, and I would be happy to discuss them with you.

Tree, our new Community Outreach director will be along shortly to share with you some of our incentives for this fundraiser. Some of them are going to be quite fun, I believe, and I think you'll enjoy them. We have some creative things going on.

For myself, I'm about to write my check for my donation, which I'll deposit tomorrow. Because I believe in putting my money where my mouth is.

Thank you for your time, and thank you now for your generosity.

Oh. I'm afraid that I can't place a monetary value on my friendships. Guess that means I shouldn't donate.

Just want to let everyone know that I will be selling Friendship Default Swaps in order to allow you to hedge against your friendships at the site failing. Depending on certain parameters, for every $20 you monetize your friendships here with you'll be eligible to receive $11-15 back if said friendships dissolve. It's an excellent way to insure your friendship-based donation.

For the high rollers among you, I'll also be packaging a large number of Friendship Default Swaps up and securitizing them into tranches based on likelihood of flouncey-flouncing, starting with AAA for the lowest risk. You'll be able to invest in the real time interactions that go on here.

For an earnings prospectus and other information, please DM Raam or I.

:indifferent:

I alone am worth $1,000,000.

Or perhaps what we have constitutes more than friendship and so you did not include my value in your calculation of $17.40.

Spammers!

Okay, if you will all excuse Jeffan and crew and their spamming this up before I could get you the rest of the information... read on!

Some Prizes For Our Donors
This year we are going to do something new and very exciting and give everyone a new way to win a little recognition. Instead of just having our (very awesome) individual prizes we will also have a great prize for our most generous community group!

Community Group Prize:
Beginning this year every ajah, company, recruits, novices, accepted, soldiers and don’t forget the citizens- will have the ability to be named the most generous and philanthropic community group of the year. There are some top secret details that will be revealed over the duration of the fundraiser but here are some of the most important.
-Prize will be awarded based on total donations from group divided by the number of members in group. (ie: there are 15 members of the purple ajah, in total they donated $100. 100/15 = $6.67)
-Groups in competition: Citizens, Novices, Recruits, Accepted, Soldiers, MDD, VC, SDS, DM, Green, Yellow, Blue, Brown, Red, Grey, and White.
-Final numbers and the winner will be announced August 10th, 2012.
-Aspirant accepted or soldiers’ donations will be counted toward their ajah or company of aspiration.
-Members who are raised, aspire, or demote in the duration of the fundraiser: donation counted toward group they are in at the end- August 1st, 2012.
-Anonymous donations and company-matched donations will not be counted toward the community group total.

Stay tuned for the trophy!

Individual Prizes:
All donors are eligible for the below mentioned prizes unless they are anonymous or otherwise specify that they do not want to be eligible. To specify a disinterest in being eligible, please send me an email at Outreach@TarValon.net
The winners will be selected through random number generation and will be announced on August 10th, 2012.

All donors giving $5 or more will have a leaf placed on the Avendesora Tree of Donors

Donation Prize Levels
$10+ Drawing for $25 gift certificate - Winners Choice!
$25+ Drawing for $50 gift certificate - Winners Choice!
$50+ Drawing for Grand Prize- $100 TV.net Event Gift Certificate

*Winners Choice: Winners have the choice of selecting a gift card from their local Amazon, Badali or Taveren Tees

**Grand prize event gift certificate is transferrable to another member. Must be used by one member attending one event- cannot be broken up for use at multiple events. Must be used by December 2013. Cannot be sold. Questions, please contact Outreach@TarValon.net

**Drawing for Grand Prize will be held first, all non-winners will be entered into subsequent drawing for the $50 gift certificates. All non-winners will again be entered into the subsequent drawing for the $25 gift certificates.

So, anyone excited now?

So, want to help raise awareness? Want to just show that you’ve followed Riley’s lead and put your money where your mouth is?

Try on one of these!

Question! Will it be divided by number of donors within a membership group, or all members of of that membership group? I know some of us have super inactive people in our membership groups, so that might make things a little difficult. :P

Also, I love how you called it "my crew" - they're going to love that. :pleased-1:

Jeffan, I also want to add (now that I can spam it up as well) that your friendship value needs to be amended again as obviously you failed to count me. I know I must be nearly priceless to you Jeffy, as I was the first tower person that you ever met and instead of running for the hills you’re still here!

Regarding your other question- it will be divided by the total number of members, active and inactive alike. This will give you an opportunity to pester your inactive members to post more. Also, I think its pretty fair to say that all of our membership groups have both active and inactive members- except the Purple Ajah who are at a very serious disadvantage!

So if we are donating with our respective groups.. we should probably include the information like who we are here at the tower in our paypal payment notes I'm assuming. Also I sent it via my only paypal account which says it is a business (it was for a bit but I don't work through my business anymore but paypal won't let me change it back to just an individual account). So will it count as me as a single person?

Oh! And something else important. Please send me an email if you send something via snailmail. LEt me know when you sent it, so I can be on the lookout. We've lost too many payments here lately for my taste.
