I still don't recall reading for certain just what happened to Asmodean. Did I miss something?

It was stated in the glossary for ToM, I think. Also referenced in passing by the Forsaken, when Moridin asked her if she was going to make a habit of killing forsaken...

Yeah, I was curious if there was ever an actual admission of guilt kind of thing. I'll make it a point to look out for it on my upcoming reread. Thanks!

No direct admission, but after killing Aran'gar, Graendal is told that she is now responsible for the death of two of the chosen

I know, that Graendal claimed to have killed Asmodean. Do we ever get to know where (not in the room he searched for wine for sure) and how (balefire?)?

I forget which book, because they all blend together for me, but it was in the one where Rand kills Rhavin. They go to Caemlyn, do the chasey thing around the palace, all that. Asmo was killed with the lightning along with Mat and Avi, and then brought back with Rand's balefire. We get a PoV from Asmo at the end where he pretty much figures out what happened to him but doesn't want to think about it too hard. Then he says something like, "Oh, you? What are you doing here?" and then dies.

As others have said, it was (much) later confirmed that Graendal did it. I can't remember for sure if it's confirmed that he was balefired, but I think it's a pretty safe assumption.

I do know the scene pretty well and also that Graendal did it, I'm just asking about the circumstances. Point being that there were so many capable channellers around that channelling within the palace must have been noticed, especially if it was strong channelling for balefire - but it seems, noone noticed anything, and that does not sit right with me.

Well during that time there was some pretty heavy channeling going on in the back round wasn't there? and anyway, a quick gateway in, burn Asmo out of existence, gateway back to Natrim's Barrow isn't too hard a job, especially when you have a bunch of untrained aes sedai, and a dragon who can't read residues. And by the way; Who did you think Shaidar Han was talking about when he said "3 chosen have fallen because of your actions" if not Asmodean, Aran'gar and Messana?

The time when Asmodean died was a quiet one, no fights any more.

Oh, I see. I don't think it's too unusual, though. I mean, you don't HAVE to use a strong thread of balefire to kill someone. And I believe there were a lot of female channelers around in the palace at the time, what with all the wise ones. I don't think it's too surprising that no one noticed.

Given how Asmodean was shielded so he could barely channel, she wouldn't've had to've channel strongly to kill him, I expect.

And she didn't have to necessarily use balefire. The text reads "The word still hung in the air when death took him." It could have been balefire, but it would had to have been tiny. But we need to remember the circumstances that brought her there. She was sneaking around the palace looking for Rahvin's stash of *angreal. It isn't specifically stated that she was, but in one of her latter POV she mentions how dangerous it was when she was sneaking around Illian after Rand and the Ashaman took control. She also implies that that wasn't the only time she had gone scavenging after a Forsaken was defeated. So all that to say that she was probably sneaking around the palace in Caemlyn, Asmodean opened the same door she was about to open, they recognized one another, and her survival instincts kicked in and she smote Asmodean. IMHO :)
