Thanks! My original name was already in use so I had to pick another.... this just popped into my head. I love the Two Rivers people AND the Aiel so the mix suits me!
My application was approved in about five days or so. I have to admit I squealed like a little girl.

Mentors are assigned when you enter the tower. So yes, they are official and there is a process to go through but you get assigned one once you enter the tower, so it doesn't have it's own process.
