I am re-reading the series and have just finished reading outloud my third book. I started with A New Spring, Eye of the World and now Great Hunt. I am reading these out-loud to my wife, a chapter a day. Originally I read them when she had brain surgery a decade ago.
I pick up so much more reading out loud.
Unlike many, I have not done the audiobooks, so my characterizations are limited to 1) voices I can do, and 2) my own interpretations.
So far, I give Rand a British RP accent. He is going to rule someday. Perrin gets a hard Appalachian (West Virginia) mountain accent. Mat gets a twangy country (think Hee-Haw) accent. I give Nynaeve and Egwene both a genteel north Georgian Drawl. Most of the Aes Sedai get a prim British RP. Ba'azalmaan I try to make sound like Voldemort.
The Seanchan I imagine as Asian. Domon and his crew as the stereotyped pirates. Hurin, for want of anything else, an Irish west coast accent (Galway?).
I am at a loss as to what to do with Min. I just do a harsh mid-American.
I am amazed at how much is foreshadowed in these early books. Of course, having read them all once before, I now know what to look for. It is difficult not giving away the spoilers. On the other hand, it helps in clarifying confusing events.
Well, the Dragon Reborn is next. Between vacations coming up and all I expect to finish re-reading it in October.
