Mat's Luck

Hi all, so i have just read the part in the dragon reborn where Mat beats Gawyn and Galad with his quarterstaff.

I just wanted peoples opinions on how do you think the show is going to portray Mat's luck?

I only ask because i wondered, if Mat just turns up and the show doesn't portray anything, then could this seem a bit silly in the things Mat does? It might come across fine i just wondered what peoples opinions were.

Oh really? i just assumed because the other two were training, and probably have been for sometime, and Robert Jordan had not really mentioned how good mat was with his staff before? Unless i was mistaken. But that was why I then assumed it must be his luck. Haha

Maybe further in the books i see his luck happen more, which then might shed some light on the fact this wasn't his luck at all.

I think you are somewhat right. IIRC There is the speech where Hammar recounts how the greatest swordsman he ever trained was beaten by a farmer with a quarterstaff. The quarterstaff holds an obvious advantage over a sword. I think though, there is a scene where Matt slips slightly which is a stroke of luck and helps him win the fight.

Worth remembering as well that Mat was the best in the TR with the staff (after his da) which places him as pretty skilled considering the strength of the Old Blood in the TR.

Also OP - you are very close to seeing Mats luck in action - no spoilers from me though!

yeah good points thanks for that! I am curious as to how the TV show is going to portray mat's luck when they happen, whether they are just going to show the events that occur and roll with it without necessarily pointing out anything visually in the show.

I expect a fair amount of camera zoom and slow motion whenever the dice are rolled. Maybe one or two teeter on edge of a loosing toss before falling to a winning one.

This is a good point - I think this would be an easier way to show his luck. I mean, if you just show his pockets before and after an evening of gambling, it could also be the result of him cheating or stealing.
