I've educated a lot of Brown about Eurovison, probably against their will, but they know about the joy of Eurovision now or at least my enthusiasm for it since I've watched as long as I can remember.

Also, you don't necessarily need to understand Eurovision to watch or like the movie, they explain pretty well it's a song contest. If you are familiar with Eurovision though, it does allow you to see how close they get to the real thing, with some obvious differences, like where it's hosted :look: :giggle

I did not mean to insult. I am sorry if I came across as condescending, that is not what I meant.
I guess I am just used to people referring to Eurovision not really knowing what it is...

I took no offense, Adui Sedai. :D I get it, if I were to mention Eurovision to the majority of people I know they would totally be lost.

Yeah, same here Kyla... most of my RL friends would have no clue. I've known what it is for a while but never really watched/listened til recently. This year I got really obsessed with Iceland's song and ended up going down the rabbit hole of listening to all the songs that were supposed to be for this year, as well as a bunch from prior years (thanks to @Loraella Melodie's recs :love).

I would not know what it was if it wasn't for this site. It certainly isn't on the radar for most Americans.

This was all over my childhood. We always gathered and got stuffed with sweets and popcorn for it. A lot of vague memories from when I was small related to the eurovision - no matter how good or bad the actual songs are :song

The best part is that it is the bad songs that are often the ones remembered

The eurovision went through an odd phase a few years ago: I can't remember what country but someone sent a rock band that reminded me of Ramstein but dressed as monsters of some sort! After seeing that, Ireland sent Dustin the Turkey (a puppet) in a subsequent year with a god-awful song. I think the title was "Ireland:10 points" but in French. I doubt we made it to the main night :rofl

Theres an unofficial theory in Ireland that who-ever selects the song for Ireland for many years purposefully didn't want us to win and sent dodgy acts. At one point long ago we won and had to host for multiple years in a row and it nearly bankrupt the country :rofl Nowadays though I don't think we could win no matter how hard we tried..

Ireland still has the most wins I think, but Sweden is after that throne ;)

Norway has the record for most bottom places, and for the most 0 points total.

Well, one of the Baltic countries had a song where the lyric was basically "We are the winners of Eurovision" repeated over and over ;)

And Iceland had a song where the artist congratulated Iceland with the fact that she was born there and born to win Eurovision. She's a comedian and I actually liked the song, lol. I don't watch nor care about Eurovision tbh. It's difficult to escape some of it though, lol. I've even hosted people who came just to watch the contest. I did not join them

I remember the last time Norway won in 2009. It was May 16th, and I was "russ" (A Norwegian thing where you celebrate graduation from high school (before the actual exams) by wearing a special pair of trousers and generally partying) We were three people gathered at @Enya Tawarwaith s house and we were extatic! We spammed the Eurovision thread here on the forums, hyped each other up, and when Rybak sang the song as a winner, we opened every door and window, put the TV on as koud as we could and sang along into the night. You know, in case some of the neighbours had not heard the wonderful news
May 17th is our Constitution Day, and we have many parades, both kids, youths and of course, russ. I think every russ parade that year sang "Fairytale" at the top of their lungs that day

Norway has only won three times, so it is a BIG DEAL when we do :joy

I would like to have this on Sunday during the afternoon so all you lovely people on the other side of the world can attend!

I start my new schedule and would not be able to have it until 630 Central time on Saturday.

So what time would be good for everyone on Sunday?

This coming Sunday (the 8th?) I'll be at work until 5pm Central and may or may not have to be putting my kiddo to bed at 7pm. If it's during bedtime, though, I can try to pop in and out.
