Just randomly wherever I felt like going next. And then I stayed for at least 4 weeks to get a sense of how the group felt (because if you visit during a more quiet period like the holidays, it may give you a wrong impression).
I like the idea of the random. Alphabetical is boring and predictable, even if done backwards. Going by the colors as based on the Accepted bands is another, but also predictable. I personally followed invitations. Whoever came to be first with "guest with us" is how I ordered mine back when I was Accepted.
I wrote down the Ajahs/Companies as they popped into my head, assigning them a number from 1-11. I then used a random number generator to determine the order (duplicates were thrown out...) I aim to be in each one somewhere between 2-3 weeks on my first pass through, then my second pass I'll likely be very flexible with timelines.
Sorry to be critical, but discussions like these always make me wonder: is it really neccessary to guest with every group available? Wouldn't it make sense to narrow it down beforehand and then only guest with the 2 or 3 most likely choices for a longer time?
Sephrenia, a reply to you. I never thought that I would be a Gray Sedai, but I guested all of the Ajah and that is where I fitted best. So it shouldn't be just based on what impression you get before, but you should guest all to see if it's something for you or not...
Critical isn't necessarily bad! No need to apologize, imo. Of the 11 groups, I actually only guested with 8 of them when I demoted. I'm now going back and spending a month on a narrower list. But if I were brand-spanking new to the community, I don't think guesting everywhere would be a bad idea. It's hard to get a feel for a place without actually being in the place for many of our membership groups, and if one's basis for understanding is just the book concepts - TV.Net is a bit different!
Nia - I get what you're saying, but I tend to agree with both Imzadi and Erin on this. As a new member who didn't know many people before joining the site, I wasn't familiar with any of the site-specific membership groups. It was very beneficial to me to Guest with all the Ajahs. I knew that I didn't want to be a Gaidin, so I chose not to Guest with them (I decided to Aspire a month before Guesting with the Companies would have been available, knowing that I wouldn't go that route). I never thought of myself as being a Gray Ajah and didn't know many Grays on the site so I would likely have not Guested with them if I made a short list in advance. Now that I'm an SM and have been active on the site for a while, I have a much better idea what all the groups are like. If I Demoted (which I'm not planning to do) I would likely only Guest with a portion of the groups.
