Small Pets: Adopt, Don’t Shop

When I got my first guinea pig, Pepper, there was much that I didn’t know about owning guinea pigs. Her first cage was way too small, and fleece blankets were actually superior to paper bedding. However, possibly the worst thing I did was buying Pepper from PetSmart in the first place. It was only after owning Pepper that I learned it was possible to adopt guinea pigs and other small critters at local rescues. Little did I know the animal abuse that happens at the suppliers for PetSmart, PetCo, and other large pet stores, where poor females are forced to keep breeding at pet mills such as Holmes Farms. At these mills, PETA has documented animals living in wire cages among feces and their fellows left to die. This report by PETA found numerous other examples of animal cruelty, and the USDA is conducting an investigation into Holmes Farms. Another issue with small pets being sold at pet stores is that they are marketed as easy pets for small children, when they are in fact a huge responsibility and quite a lot of work - take it from me! So. Much. Poop. Prey animals such as rabbits or guinea pigs may not warm up to humans quickly, causing children to lose interest, and the parents to rehome or abandon the pets. So please, do your research before buying these delightful animals- look into adopting from a local shelter. Or, consider donating money or time to a local small animal shelter!

The abuse issue causes me so much rage. That's why I love working at a small local pet store and getting to pair up with a local rescue so that we have adoptable cats around for people to meet.

Thanks for posting this, Idine; I didn't know that small animals could be gotten from local rescues as well!

your piggies are adorable, Idine, and thank you for the info!

rabbits are another small animal that people don't often know so much about, and if purchased on a whim (say, around Easter), many rabbits sadly don't live past their first year because they didn't get proper care. when really, they could easily live 8-12 years or more.

I don't think Petsmart sells rabbits (at least the one nearby doesn't) but there are definitely breeders whose rabbits don't have the best conditions, and there are rabbit rescues around the country that have plenty of animals needing a good home.

anyway, we first adopted a pair of rabbits almost seven years ago from a local rabbit shelter and I've learned a ton since. I'm always happy to talk about rabbits!

a few resources:
House Rabbit Society is the nation's largest rabbit welfare group, they help with education, finding homes, etc.
House Rabbit Resource Network is local to me in Central Texas, and they sometimes have as many as one or two hundred rabbits waiting for adoption. Just recently they took in 56 rabbits from a local breeder who surrendered them.

thanks for letting me, um, piggyback on the small animal train here. :tiere100:
