Up through TGH ch 38! Two things...

- I love the back-to-back chapters of the girls in the Tower talking about how terrified they are of channeling too much and how dangerous even their little exercise with the balls of light is, and then Rand off with Verin encouraging him to use a portal stone that no one has managed since the Age of Legends.

- I remember teenage me immediately recognizing the Seanchan as the big bad that was here for the long run. The other books I tended to read at that point usually just had villains that were like rabid monsters destroying everything. I remember wondering how they were ever going to get enough people to resist an invading army that had some weird new rules but mostly left ordinary people alone so nothing major changed. It felt sooo insidious and eye opening to me.

I started listening to the Eye of the World! I can't promise that I will make it through, as I tend to have a mental hiccup around the Dragon Reborn, but I'm hoping maybe listening instead of reading will cure me of it?

Anyway - I noticed for the first time how beautiful these books are. I speed read when I read, so while I don't miss words, I guess I miss... Craft? Or something? At any rate, the reading by Rosamund Pike is glorious and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

I really wish I could do audiobooks in situations other than on road trips, because I'm the same way...I have to really force myself to slow down and take in the details.

Yeah, I'm much the same way. I enjoy it but I can't listen and do anything that isn't autopilot. I'd just drop 50 million stitches or lose track of the book if I tried to knit.

Yes, her narration is absolutely beautiful!

I just got to Nyneave, Min, and Elayne rescuing Egwene from the Seanchan. Poor Egwene! When she breaks down after they rescue her and she tortures Renna I always find myself close to sobbing on her behalf.

I’m on Winter’s Heart, and am also drawing items that represent characters. For Juilin’s Taraboner Hat, what kind is it? Is it a fez, a Pacific Northwest Native American style weaved hat, a bamboo hat, or something else? I know that it’s conical and called “ridiculous”, but that’s it, other than it might be red?

I think sometimes you need to let your own imagination finish the rest of the details. I think RJ would have wanted it that way, Brandon too.

I finished The Great Hunt!

One thing that made me think this time. After Mat blows the Horn, the heroes pretty much ignore him and say "We have come to the Horn, but we must follow the banner. And the Dragon." So what was all that about the heroes fighting for the dark side if the wrong person blew the Horn? 🤔

I think it's mentioned in the last book that the Heroes wouldn't fight for the Shadow, but they would have been prevented to fight for the Light if the Shadow had the Horn.

I wonder what that means. The obvious thing would be that they would just not blow the horn, but in TGH they seemed to think the only thing stopping Fain from blowing the horn and ruining everything was that he didn't know how to open the box.
