Many SMs are willing to sponsor people if they get to know them a little. So I'd suggest just spending some time getting to know people and making friends and then PMing SMs that you have chatted with, hung around with, etc, asking them to sponsor you.

This. I PM'd a couple of people who I had spoken with one way or another, and eventually (after much nail-biting) asked them to sponsor me If you feel you've made friends with a couple of SMs then that's a good place to start
