I can't even remember what made me pick up this ugly pink book in the bookstore and read it (German "Eye of the world" - first book in this thread). I hide all my german wot books somewhere at the bottom of my bookshelf and am now trying to fill up my wot series with the hardcover books by TOR. Since I couldn't wait for the series to be published in German, I read the later part of WoT in english and now my books change somewhere in between.
The newer german books look a little bit better imo, but stilll.... what is the dragon doing there with the wolf for example? :look:

What Sephrenia said. The German covers of the first version are awful, especially the pink one. :desk I stopped reading in German after the third translator.

@ Kallaes Doon - thanks for pointing to the sources!
@ Seprenia and Lenore - thank you for your responses! Well, tastes differ - if I hadn't liked at least some of them (and "the pink one" #1 - fade & trollocs coming from the mountains of mist - perhaps best), I wouldn't have presented them here.
There can be no difference in opinion about the translations - they should be thoroughly revised, but no one cares. When Piper took the series from Heyne, this would have been a great opportunity, but no ... shame on the publishers. I just wonder why translator #3 gets all the criticism - perhaps because he promised to do a better job than his predecessors. In a way he did - at least he liked the story and had a feel for the style, but of course there are the typical slips of low-paid short-deadline work, like "the Band does mostly not consist of soldiers" (for: aren't just any soldiers, KoD ch. 36, Mat to Karede) or putting a mole instead of a badger into Mat's bag (ToM, end of ch. 44). But these things are quite rare (unlike translator #2's work, where you find such things at least every five pages). And then it was #1 who made the tower a castle, the wisdom a visionaire, and who came up with the weird term "Behüter" for "warder" - plus just so many ordinary slips - the funny one that sticks to my memory changing "numbers of chaos" to "the number of the Beast" (TGH, ch. 37, Verin speaking). No, this popular number (29A - doesn't look like much in hex, does it?) won't get you anywhere on a portal stone ...

I didn't mean #1 (light pink) but the shocking pink one with the naked channeller and the Seanchan soldiers. Completely wrong from the books and for sure not an impression of Nynaeve's Accepted test.

I wouldn't have had a problem with changing translators if those would have at least kept their vocabular for main characters straight, but they just didn't. You simply can't pick up a translation in the middle of a series without obviously not reading one of the previous books.
