For me it mostly sits in the back of my mind as I go through my day. I have more involved spurts where I sit down & really think things through, analyze how the different membership groups feel & try to examine how I feel about them and how much I actually mesh with the group's identity. There are some places I've very much loved, with fantastic people in them, but where I don't think I am actually fantastic like they are. :p They probably aren't my home because I approach the world differently, no matter how much I love the place and enjoy spending time with them. A decent portion of my time is introspective, I need to figure out what I am more than who I like.

Most of the time though I'm in that same sponge-mode you mentioned. I sit back & enjoy the time I have in each place, read the threads, talk to the members, etc. When I leave a place I write up a few paragraphs with my thoughts & impressions. I plan to do a second pass through many of them again to get a better sample size and to see them from a better perspective, having seen them all(ish).

I definitely did the sponge strategy when I was guesting, though I also kept a journal (word document) where I'd write down thoughts on each of the Ajahs as I visited them, so I could look over them later just in case. It ended up being a relatively easy decision for me, but I did still do a lot of thinking about it and analyzing each of the Ajahs individually to make sure I wasn't overlooking something.
