As long as the core of the character and meaningful-to-the-story character descriptions are kept in tact, Anything goes. This is an adaptation of a giant story.

All we know about Kari is that she was gray eyed, red haired. Andoran, and that her parents set up as merchants in Illian, not that she was born there. That's the set-up for how she meets Tam.

I guess therein lies the problem with some English speakers. Any accent I hear in a (Fantasy/Sci-fi) show that is not British or Scottish, I automatically assume for the role. In Stargate Atlantis, the Czech representative was the child of Czech Immigrants, but apparently hammed up the accent...
