I think the working philosophy of the showrunners is that Jordan left enough ambiguity in the text to do an interpretation where the Two Rivers area is a melting pot settled by people from all varieties of what our Age would consider different ethnic groups.

Almost certainly some cast members will not read the whole series. I'm 100% confident it wouldn't be any kind of formal requirement in the casting process. Most likely several of the principle actors will at least go on to read portions of the books where their character features prominently...

Open question: From a script-writer's perspective, what vital role does Thom play in the plot that can't be filled by Moiraine for exposition, or others? (To be clear, I like the character a lot; but he seems ripe for trimming out in a limited series.)

My personal theory is that the Caemlyn royal family, including Elayne, will be moved to season 2 at the earliest, and not actually cast until then. But then I'm often wrong about these things. :p

Overall, I don't feel like this is really anything but a tempest in a teapot. I think worries about a vast wave of racism among fandom are somewhat exaggerated by the nature of social media and other online environments. I've come to find over the years that virtually 95% of things that become...
