Right, but it's all about perception. If they felt like that person was about to kill them and had full ability to unless they channeled in a way that would deal the other harm, then they could, no matter what the reality of the situation was.

I think that falls within two of the loopholes. One, they know that whoever is channeling is a darkfriend, or else they wouldn't be there and channeling (I believe that's a stipulation for that rule). The other, which I think applies even more is that it's in the defense of their lives or that...

    Yup, that guy Aulrick.

It was because, even if Thom had killed the King, then the guy vying for position would have been raised to King. But he was killed due to some pretty wicked forces (I can't remember if it was a gholam, forsaken, or what) after they realized he had let Rand go.

Yeah, Rand was pretty much the other half of it, without realizing it. But also, don't forget that Thom also killed Moiraine's cousin/Morgase's husband too.

Yeah, I believe one of the Forsaken killed the guy vying for the throne, and Thom killed Galladrian (after he had Thom's lover killed) ... which is the sole reason why there was civil war in Cairhien.

That makes a lot of sense. That's definitely backed by the idea that they have the most vast network of eyes and ears.

I mean maybe it's actually the Aes Sedai look that Perrin doesn't realize at this stage, and she's Blue Ajah. If so, there's a chance her purpose is to keep the Aiel descendants, the Tua'than, following the Way of the Leaf. I'm sure it's a bit of a stretch, but possible.

Side note, but still related. Did any of you notice that little hint of Tinker channeler description in EotW? or in TSR? I think it very likely that Ila is able to channel, and is a wilder. If not that, then perhaps her blue shawl hints that she's another one of the purposes of the blue...

It wasn't mentioned until a bit later. Rand is meeting with Cads in the manor in the middle of nowhere when she tells him that Callandor amplifies the madness from the taint and he thinks back to that moment when he killed Adley when fighting the Seanchan.

    New Stuff Found upon Re-read

Right, but that was linked to the madness from the Taint. Now the madness in his brain is kept in check by the white stuff ever since he went Zen Rand, and Saidin has been cleansed. Therefore those should no longer be an issue ... but the issue they created may provide a hint into the current...

That's true. He didn't really understand what balefire was at that point, so he didn't have to worry about the solid effects it would have, but he did think at the last moment that surely it would overwhelm him. And he did something never seen before, or I believe since ... he channeled into...

Well, it has all the parts: Callandor, Ba'alzamon being bound to the DO with those black chords, and being bound back to Saidin by visually being divided into seemingly two versions of himself. I don't know what it could mean, but I feel like there's a definite connection there to the...

    New Stuff Found upon Re-read

Two things: First of all, you're partly correct on Callandor being used to stop balefire, but in the same way Perrin split it when defending Egwene. Rand was in T'A'R when it happened. Secondly, I got another hint for the "bind in twain"

Right, but (no offense to the womenfolk out there) but she's a woman and Rand's lover. She's not likely going to tell him straight out that he's wrong at this point in the story. She's going to put it nicely so that he'll more likely listen to her. "Maybe" and a grimace is women-talk for...

I disagree Aulrick. Based on the way RJ was writing, it feels like it's one of those moments he used a lot early on; One character thinks they know what's going on by jumping to conclusions and is completely wrong (Rand in this instance), and the other is doing research and is either completely...

No, I'm thinking the TP is coming from the DO ... and not that it could be cleansed, but that it has a power beyond what we can anticipate when it comes to fighting the DO. Hm ... maybe you're right ... it could just be Callandor that's the key.
  19. Midian Venamar

    New Stuff Found upon Re-read

Well, if the taint is the DO's touch, and the TP is the essence of the DO ... I feel it's pretty closely related.

Ah, that's true Analiese. I had forgotten about that reference to it. Ooh! I never thought of that before, but that actually supports the theory! The Eye is the key. The things found at the Eye were: the dragon banner, Someshta, the Horn, but most importantly a pool of pure Saidin. But...
