I don't understand the hang up around voice chat, either. Mods do not have to be present 24/7 by any means and our average user base is 25-35- more than old enough to be honest about a verbal confrontation if need be (and that's assuming there are no witnesses for said confrontation).

The entire point of Discord is that you don't have to have a half a million clients in order to allow everyone to access it. You have one client, that syncs across every device you install it on...and that *one* client has had *one* major outage (defined as: I could not access my server for more...
Something to add to the Discord commentary:
This would mean personalized server imagery, better voice chat services, fun badges, a hoodie to give to someone, and access to other premium features.
Did I mention it's free to use as well as ad-free, synced across every known computer/phone...
My experience comes from watching a community go from a lot of nasty gossip to zero nasty gossip and a large, friendly, tight-knit group as a direct result of switching from IRC to Discord, and the two things that made the biggest difference were chat history and the super accessible app.

Yeah, you can turn off chat history if you really want to, though I've found that having it on actually encourages more chat and keeps the flow of conversation going, since people who join can jump right in. It also VASTLY lessens nasty blow ups and gossip. Like...they don't exist on my most...
I am really curious what reasons there are other than voice chat to not use Discord. It is easily the most versatile, free, ad-free, pretty to look at, truly accessible client that exists. It's very perplexing and disappointing to see it set aside so quickly.
I don't think that's avoidable, Alyccea. Chat apps are constantly (as in every 2-3 seconds) sending and receiving data, which by nature eats battery. :(
I have not yet found one I like enough to continue using, to be honest. (Also, keep in mind I used to be an IRC fiend, so I totally get the attachment on a very personal level. For me, it's more about what will actually work for the site to generate more interaction and community building. IRC...
None of these things are actually impossible with a Discord server. :P Slack is a little more complicated/private, but it could be done.
Also...impromptu chat groups do not have the same attraction factor as the main "Chat" link does. I don't want to create an unintentional clique, and that...
Discord has browser access as well as a free (and ad free) desktop app for Mac, PC, Linux, iOS, and Droid. It remembers who you are from device to device, which I find useful, but you do not have to have the mobile device in order to use the service.
I have suggested to the tech people that we switch to Discord. The Green Ajah uses it for their private chat now, and it's fab. ^^ I would LOVE to switch away from IRC, to be honest, but I know that's a big change that takes time and discussion.
