You know, something else that surprised me was the extensive use of Balefire during the last battle. I assume the DO's goal hasn't changed between the wars, so why did it now want to weaken the pattern, but he didn't want it last time and they stopped using it? I was amazed that it was used so...

I disagree. I think it was AWESOME! The other leaders would have never accepted Mat to lead the forces. The great captains were awesome, and it was a brilliant way to introduce Mat into the equation. As for Shaidar Haran - I understood the story point of why he ended like that. I'm just saying...
