As I'm sure you have all heard by now, disaster has struck Japan and the Pacific. (If you are still getting caught up, check out Google's Crisis Response page.)

At times like these, the support of individuals can help save and rebuild communities. And so, we encourage you to reach out and help. There are many organizations that will begin relief efforts. We have decided to support the Red Cross, not only because of the work they consistently do throughout the world, but in particular because they are collecting money for both Japan and for Pacific islands affected by the tsunami.

We are starting this off with a $200 donation from TarValon.Net to the American Red Cross, specifically to aid relief efforts in Japan and the Pacific. This donation is coming from our general Tower funds.

Please consider joining us, and contributing to this organization as well.

How you can help

You can donate online through the Red Cross:
American Red Cross
Canadian Red Cross
British Red Cross
Finnish Red Cross
New Zealand Red Cross

You can donate through text, which will add the appropriate amount to your next phone bill:
America - text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 (details)
Canada - text ASIA to 30333 to donate $5 (details)

Please also considering donating blood, if you are eligible. I know that the American Red Cross at least is not yet collecting/sending blood to Japan, because it has not been requested. However, if/when assistance is requested, blood will be needed. Blood is always needed, so even if your donation does not go to these efforts, it will help someone, somewhere. Details on donating blood can be found at the following:
American Red Cross
British Red Cross

If you would prefer to donate through the Red Cross organization of your specific country, please post with that donation page, and I will add it here. I don't trust my language skills to navigate correctly to the donation pages of other countries.

And lastly, you can use the following sig icons to show your support throughout the boards:

Thank you, everyone, for helping us to show support and aid those in need. :grouphug

I hope it's okay to post this here.
For those of us on Livejournal or Dreamwidth, there are auctions being held here and here, so if you don't have money to donate maybe you can think of auctioning something off. The money is going directly to the Red Cross and similar organizations as well, and they let you sell pretty much everything, from written stories over food and jewellery to art, etc.
They also did this when Haiti happened and it was very successful, so please consider it <3

Thank you for the info! Since I started working at a hotel with the Japan Embassy as one of its regular clients, I have come to know the Japanese and I'm really fascinated by them. They are truly unique people who have managed to preserve their traditions and customs. Japan is first in my travel list when I could afford it. I hate to see this happening to them. :cry

I donated via text message. I've been personally impacted by this tragedy, and have endured personal tragedy in my life for which the Red Cross was there immediately with help for me and my family. I'll never forget that. I'm keeping Japan in my thoughts.

I hope I'm not out of line for suggesting Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) also - they have a very efficient donation/care ratio, with less than 2% going to management and general expenses.

I personally didn't (really) donate anything,

But my bio prof donated $1000 to the Relief fund :) (The money came from what he earned from his students buying the textbooks)

Thanks everyone for your contributions!

I've updated my post to include the other country Red Cross pages given. Thanks for the info. And Aldus, that's not out of line at all! Doctors Without Borders is a great group, and we've run drives for them in the past as well. :D

Thanks for posting about donating blood, Kariada Sedai! I don't have any money to spare right now, but I gave blood today at the American Red Cross. :)
