Best way to go about getting a reference?

I PM'd a few SM's who posted in my introductory thread. I figured if they said to PM them with questions, then they'd be open to receiving a PM with questions. If you look around and find posts by someone that you enjoy, PM them and talk to them about what they posted. Most are open to talking and that could strike up a conversation for more.
