Mother, Melissa... Where does one start?

It's been a ride and you have shown everyone how to do it - regardless of tech issues, personal issues, and drama. Sort of like the Jackie Kennedy of Amyrlins. You have shown how outrageous goals aren't really so outrageous and with time and dedication can be achieved.

I fully support the idea mentioned at some point, "Once an Amyrlin, ALWAYS an Amyrlin." The title will always be yours and no one can fill your shoes the way you did. You have more than earned the chance to have fun and chill out. Enjoy, just please don't hide in the Green Hallways too much. :hug

it shouldn't have ... unless its' past midnight to you now - her post was 2hrs earlier than the time it is now - so I don't see how it could have ...
According to my world clock
people in the UK would have seen it posted at 11.49pm March 31 (So OK that's close but still no after April 1)
People in South Africa would have seen it posted addmittedly at 1.49am April 1
but people in the US would have seen it posted at 6.49pm March 31st

and right now, it's only 8.50pm in the US (yeah?)
again this is according to my world clock in my phone, although I did have it just checked by someone who lives near Dallas, I can't imagine the US has enough time zones that would add the extra almost 5.5hrs necessary for "A LOT" of people to see it as April 1st and that's where the bulk of members are :/

And as it's almost 9pm in the US and almost midday here, I just don't see how that many people could have seen it as April 1st ... because my posts are probably STILL showing up as April 1st, even though it's well and truely April 2nd :/

Ok guys, we don't need to debate in this thread what time she posted and whether it IS or IS NOT an April Fool's joke. We'll find out tomorrow I imagine, but until then let's keep this thread on track. It's turning into a bunch of spam about time stamps and it should be us thanking Mother for her service.

I did that too :embarassed: but I just don't believe she'd prank about resigning :/
but as I said, she's not Dead or dying, and the site's far from Dead or Dying, we're still getting new members every day, so that's a good thing :D And it wouldn't be happening if - not for the books for a start :rolleyes but mostly because of the hard work she's done and is still doing at making the site work :)

I still think I'm right about the time stamp thing though :P plus, as April Fools TECHNICALLY ends at midday at which time you're supposed to fess up to your pranks and have a good giggle ... can this font be tossed?

oh I just thought of a questioin ...

Mother, now that you're stepping away from the Stole (which I've come to terms with, sad as it is, it will certinally be an adventure with your sucessor following bravely to do what I'm far too chicken to even think of doing, although I'm out by default, even if I was eligable to apply, I'd be too chicken to submit an application, yours is not a job I envy!! Although You have done it well and competantly for as long as you have, I still don't want it :P), if the third books bring the Tower to a combination and the Aes Sedai symbol actually goes back to the one of old (black and white), will we have a Two Head seats, a Temyrlin (??) AND an Amyrlin? that would be in keeping with the books as you have always wanted to do ... or will it still be a single position held by either a Gaidin or an Aes Sedai?

I kinda like the idea of it being a duel position ... and I'm quite sure there are some men on this site that would like to be Aes Sedai , well they probably would :P (probably most of them would come from the Resident Citz club), but then that could become complicated as THEY could bond once they reached Aes Sedai, and with Women and Men both being able to bond, would it be one bond each, or a total of 1 bond like it is now, but then Gaidin can't bond, an Aes Sedai has to take them :P  oh I know it's a mutual thing ... but technically it would be the woman weaving the bond ... if both Female and Male Aes Sedai can create the weave, do we keep the status quo, or do we allow more bondings?

Also, as we currently have NO male Aes Sedai, they couldn't technially be the Temyrlin (I'm sure I'm spelling that wrong), so what would the Gaidin be retitled as if it was a Male who was most deserving of the position? (I assume it's going to the most deserving, you've already stated that you can't legally make it an Aes Sedai ONLY position, both genders must be able to apply and I doubt anyone will rig it so that even if the most deserving is Male, they'd pass them over until they got to the most deserving Female ... I just can't see that happening) but as they are Gaidin and Not Aes Sedai, what would the title be?

(only just thought of that, I know you said more details would be passed onto us after the board of directors meeting - but just in case you hadn't thought to table that question, I thought I would ask it) just colour me stupid and meddiling if it's not an appropriate question ...

***2nd Edit***
And the reason I am asking is because for so long, you've been at pains to keep us along the same tracks as the books ... except for not allowing a Black Tower to form inside the white and Not allowing a Black Ajah (which in my mind makes sense, as there technically was no Black Ajah, everyone who was a member of the black came for another ajah to start with - eg Verin)

***EDIT 1 - to fix some typo's, don't think I got them ALL though***

Thank you so much for your service and leadership, Eleyan. I'm indebted to you for creating this site and providing a close community that I've been a part of for the last seven years. I hope to meet you at a gathering in the future and I look forward to interacting with you on the boards in your new role. You'll still be around, right? :)

All the best,
Keara/ Kathryn

Alicia, I'm sure that all of your questions will be answered. However, I think that this thread should be kept as a bit more of a "Thanks so much, Melissa!" thread as opposed to "What happens now?" thread. I'm sure that sometime in the next few months (or a bit longer, probably), a thread will be going up with more ironed out details about the qualifications and what will happen if there is a male Amyrlin.

Jeffy is wise. It will be sooner than that, actually, but yes, we'll let you know more when we have more to tell you.

True that Melissa deserves all the praise that she can, and WILL be given ... but surely we can ask questions as well? She's annouced that it will be atleast a year before the change over happens - so there is plenty of time for them to work all this out ... but it'd be crazy to think that none of us have questions about how the change will effect us, or the person who rises up to the position and a hundred other things ... maybe a new thread for that would be of benefit so that this one is just a praise topic, but I'm CONFIDENT, I'm not the only one who has questions, and Although Mel and her team are pretty excellent brain stormers, there will be the occassional questioin that we ask that they haven't thought of - or perhaps, we could have a thread that asks our questions so that we can get answers when they Board does meet, that way, they can iron out all the position details, to make up a position description and application criteria, which they'll have to do - but then also they will be able to address questions we have without having to meet again to put their heads together to answer them - I'm sure an extra night's accomodation away when they meet is far cheaper and easier to organise, than them all flying to their meeting place at the next most convenient time for all of them, and if they add an extra few days, they can get some decent "drinking to the Success of Melissa" time in without worrying about the hangover :D

Mother definately deserves a party! Someone else mentioned it, and I think it's a Fab idea! We can't let Mother go quietly, and we can't let her sucessor sneak in ... Some parties (online ones as well as I'm unable to attend a real life on as I'm poor and in the wrong part of the world) But she's announced she plans to step down, and I can see why you want to keep this as a 'praise' topic, but no reason why it can't be split apart so that we can't ask questions ... But I'll behave and not ask anymore questions until a thread dedicated to THAT purpose pops up ... which I hope it does, as I said, I'm sure I'm not the only one who besides feeling sad that Mother has decided to step down, wants to ask questions about what's in store, even if they can't be answered yet, we should still have the right to ask them :)

But I do see your point :D and Mother, again, does deserve all the praise, well wishes and thanks she'll get along with all the crying people are doing about the fact she's stepping down, she deserves our tears as well, she has served us well and faithfully !!!

I think what they mean is, this is not the thread in which to ask those questions, nor is it a brainstorming thread. I'm sure admin will set up a questions thread when the time is right, if they feel it is needed. Patience.

Melissa...

I'm really at a loss for words. When I first saw this last night I was dead sure it was an April Fools joke. Now, not so much.

I'm glad that you're finally going to be able to have a life of your own, without having to constantly worry about the site. I'm glad that now you have the opportunity to, if you want, have a family and do other personal things. You could join a choir, or join a theatre group, or uncover your secret passion for clogging :look: Hey, it could happen ;)

I'm confident that you would not make this decision if you did not truly believe that there are people who can continue and build on your work here.

This place, and you, have given me and taught me so much. I've made a lot of stupid mistakes here, and by allowing me to make restitution for them, you've kept me from making those same or similar mistakes in my daily life, where the consequences would be much, much more dire than they are here.

This site's focus on being a Servant of All is why I'm a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters. It's also why I'm now giving blood on a regular basis. It's the reason I've replaced much of the anger I've held for all of my life with compassion for other people.

You introduced me to Taoism, which has brought much peace to my life.

Thank you for this place. Thank you for your service. Thank you for your compassion. Thank you for everything that you have taught me and have yet to teach me. Your shoes will be difficult to fill but I trust that there is someone here who can fill them - or, perhaps, grow into them.

When I saw the name of this thread I was sure it had to be an April Fools joke, but then I continued reading and realised that you would never do something that horrid. It makes me sad to see you go, you have been an amazing Amyrlin, an amazing leader and just built something incredible here.
I'm so thankful for the time you have dedicated to this site and wish you all the best for everything else you do. I hope every project in your life turns out as successful as this <3

I'm truly shocked. I know you weren't intending to hold this position forever, but I didn't think this would happen so soon. :brown-blink:

You've done a fantastic job with our site, Melissa. Our community runs like clockwork, and we have a great family here. I know we haven't seen the last of you, and I look forward to spending more time with you at future Cons! :hug

Melissa,

I'm so glad I got to meet you finally at this year's Anni. I realize that being a member here of just over 4 years, I'm still a noob compared to quite a few others, but you accepted me into your Courts anyway. We talked. We drank. We toasted and joked and laguhed and drank some more. I hung out with you every night of the Anni party and every night you asked me a different question about who I was, even after I gave you a three hour massage Thursday night. :p

I will always cherish these memories. Thank you so much for all you've already done and all I'm sure you will continue to do, albeit behind the scenes. I have a love for you that I can't explain, given our brief amount of time actually spent together. I wish you all the best in whatever you get yourself into from here on out.

Eleyan, the last seven years of my life have been a lovely ride, in part due to this site. :hug

*And no folks, this isn't a joke.*

I can't agree more. I haven't been here seven years yet but I have been around five years.

Thank you Jenn for summing it up,
and thank you Melissa, well... for everything. ~bow~

I haven't been around for 10 years, or seven years or even two years. I have only been around barely one year. And I am still saddened. I think that truly speaks to what you have started here; I feel as a part this community as many who have been here three times as long. And that is truly amazing.
