I just had a thought :look
Rand was a bit annoyed with the Maidens treating him like a son or brother. And Sulin especially treats him as her own son

My theory is that the Maidens treating him like a son are the ones who had a baby and gave it up like the tradition goes.
You know, like he is all their babies come back as an adult...

This may be old news for you, but I find small revelations like this every time I reread this series :look

Huh. Yeah, I can totally see that. It would explain why some of the ones his age or younger do as well.

Now that you mention it, I do remember. But I hadn't attached that as women who'd had babies treating Rand like a son -- just that the Maidens saw him as a child returned to them, a child they knew came from a Maiden.

This. Yes they explain the whole "Maidens give up their children" thing, but they never make a direct correlation between that and the Maidens who treat Rand like a child.

Rand seemed to think that the relationships between him and the maidens are random. Women twice his age treat him as a brother but a woman less than five years older acted like he was their son.
I like the idea of the maidens who had to give up their children treating Rand as their new child :)

And those who treat him as a brother were probably children of former maidens who had previously given up children. Those children would have probably known that their mothers had once given up a child before giving up the spear. As important as siblings are in Aiel culture, this would totally explain that. He is that long lost first-brother that they never knew.

I've always kind of thought that may be it. It would for sure explain why some of the younger Maidens treat him like a son.

    This.
