It's also a good way during advertising to the completely uninitiated that Egwene and Nynaeve have the potential to be Aes Sedai. Yeah, it's an early reveal in the books, but you don't want to give everything away in the trailers, either.
RJ's books were so far ahead of their time in so many ways. I believe he was absolutely a visionary and was trying to be as expansive as possible ... but there are still problems in the books when it comes to how gender is handled. Rafe has said that one of the important parts of his adaptation is trying to stay true to that spirit. He has a chance to bring Wheel of Time into the 21st century the way RJ never got to. He gets to ask interesting questions for a modern audience, and be as expansive and visionary as RJ was originally. This is one of the things I'm looking forward to the most about the show-- being able to enjoy it and experience it without wincing and cringing through all the benevolent sexism and biological essentialism. Harriet seems to be very on-board with this direction, so I am optimistic and excited.
What was the board game?

I don't think they will change who is the Dragon. They can't really even pretend to be adapting the Wheel of Time if it isn't Rand (I'm watching the Foundation series now, and while I have a lot more tolerance for changes there, I am reaching my limit of "this isn't the foundation, they are just using the name"And now it's "We don't know if he was reborn as a man or a woman"...
Yeah, if they changed the identity of the Dragon, I'm just going to stop watching the show.
I really, really hope they didn't.
I always liked that Egwene and Nynaeve left for their own reasons rather than just trailing along behind Moiraine like the boys were. Egwene had a dream and had the courage to go against all the expectations her entire society had for her in order to achieve that dream. Nynaeve left because her dedication to her commitments required her to, she couldn’t just leave the kids being manipulated by a tremendous outside force to fend for themselves. The cost to her was less important than the safety of those she was responsible for. Throwing away those motivations and turning them into just two more possible Dragons isn’t giving us stronger, more relevant female characters, it’s just furthering the idea that women are only strong if they’re doing the same things men are doing.
I hope they keep Egwene and Nynaeve’s main storylines separate rather than demoting them to the not-Rands that Mat and Perrin are in the first few books.
Well that's the first change I'm not happy about. I'd really rather them not give Perrin a wife just to woman in the fridge her. I feel like they could've found a more creative way to get that across. But, it won't stop me from watching/enjoying the show or anything.
So there you go, who the Dragon is won't change.Rafe Judkins said:One thing we’re trying to hide from the audience is who the Dragon Reborn is, it’s the mystery of the show as we start to unravel this story,” he said. “People who have read the books will know, of course.
