Haz stupid question...

When threads are "archived" where do they go? Can they later be accessed even if we have migrated from previous boards? Are they deleted? Or are they in a mysterious cloud out there that anyone can access?

Not all threads are archived. We archive threads that have "drama" or disputes, problems, procedural discussions and official business discussions, anything that we might actually need to refer to later. The rest is lost to time and the web.
