Well, it worked for American audiences, because it just came off as "foreign"
I honestly thought she was affecting an accent.

Melisandre (Carice van Houten, Dutch actress) had a horribly thick Dutch accent, though.
Like Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi? Apparently hers was sorta based on an Israeli accent, but mostly made up. I didn't recognize Melisandre's as Dutch either, even though I knew where Carice Van Houten was from and now I feel silly. Asshai beyond the Shadow - AKA the Netherlands.
we can't be THAT old.I am old and nerdy. It was a Star Trek reference.
I always imagined it as vaguely French. As long as Seanchan still have Texan accents, I'm good. :rofl

I guess therein lies the problem with some English speakers. Any accent I hear in a (Fantasy/Sci-fi) show that is not British or Scottish, I automatically assume for the role.
In Stargate Atlantis, the Czech representative was the child of Czech Immigrants, but apparently hammed up the accent for the show.
I love the accent and the character.
I always view statements like these the same way I view that time when I was 5 years old and said I was gonna run away from home because I didn't get [whatever it was]. Put on my boots and made it to the front door, before I realised that no, I kind of didn't really feel the same, and I got more upset because my parents weren't relenting.I cannot believe someone will not watch the show because they dont like an actor....
I feel a lot of people look at the castings in this way...
The "Two Rivers look" = Everyone looks somewhat the same.
I agree with this as it keeps everything "by the books". But I also agree that talent and the ability to own their character is more important that the color of skin or even the sex of the actor/actress. The color of the actors/actresses has little to do with the overall story and is not something people should worry about.
I actually never thought about it in those absolutes. Like, we know some countries have dominant traits, but I always thought that exceptions were pretty common. Like how Siuan is from Tear where people are dark-skinned, but no one ever thinks even to themselves that it's odd that she's fair-skinned. So even if Two Rivers people mostly have a bit darker skin, it's not odd that Rand or Mat are fairer. I doubt that Rand is the only really tall person there, either, or the only one with red hair or gray eyes - but he might be the only one who has all those traits at the same time, and might be the tallest.
I'm guessing some sort of standard British, but I do think it's important they all have the same accent. There's usually some racial diversity in a region, but the Two Rivers would definitely have a consistent accent.
