In one interview a year or so ago, Sanderson said

that Nightblood was created by someone who had seen shardblades and was attempting to replicate the effect on Nalthis.

His quotes:

"Nightblood is kind of his own strange thing. He's an attempt to use one magic to replicate something in another. He's closest to a spren, but kind of like a...robot spren, for lack of better words to use."

"There are those involved who knew that Shardblades existed before they tried the Nightblood experiment."

At this point, I'm thinking we need a prequel or sequel for Warbreaker

Until I noticed Nightblood was in Roshar on my second re-read, it had never occurred to me that the Investitures could be mixed like that. It makes the possibilities in the Cosmere basically endless.
