2024 is a special year, because it marks the 10th anniversary of our annual community blood drive. Together, the members of TarValon.net have donated blood or platelets at least 195 times since 2014. Thank you to every member who has given time, blood, platelets, or simply provided support to others. THANK YOU!
This blood drive first began as a call to action after the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. The success of that campaign led to the creation of the ongoing annual blood drive. Blood banks urge us to donate BEFORE the next tragedy strikes, and every donation is vitally important. According to the American Red Cross, approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the US alone (source). Your donations provide help not just in times of emergency, but to people undergoing surgery or cancer treatment, people with blood disorders or illness, and many more.
In 2023, three unique donors participated in the blood drive, with a total of ten donations between them (five pints of whole blood, five rounds of platelets), donated in the United States and Sweden. That's comparable to recent years, with 13 donations made in 2022, and ten pints donated each year from 2020-2021. The most ever donated in a single year was back in 2014, with 41 pints donated by 19 site members . . . until this year, right? RIGHT?
People of Tar Valon, Outreach and the Servant of All Team want to challenge YOU (yes, you!) to contribute to the community blood drive at least once, in some way, in 2024. Can we make more than 41 donations? A single donation can help save more than one life . . . together, we can impact hundreds of lives.
We recognize that not everyone can give blood, but there are other ways to help, such as making a donation of money or goods to your local blood center, or supporting others who donate blood. If you can physically give blood, consider making an extra donation on behalf of another site member who cannot.
How the blood drive works:
- Whenever you donate blood in any form, come back to this thread and complete the form found here.
- Please fill out the form every time you donate.
- If you take action to support the blood drive in a different way, use the same form to describe what you did.
- Record your contributions by December 31, 2024.
