One word: Sandman. That was my introduction to Neil Gaiman and it got me hooked. If you enjoyed the full cast production of American Gods, then I recommend "Neverwhere" which was on Audible too. It has James McAvoy, Natalie Dormer, Anthony Stewart Head... the list goes on. Like you, I'm not often a fan of full cast productions (the sound effects get annoying) but this version is really good. Also, I'd really recommend "Good Omens" (either the audiobook or just reading the novel) which he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett. It's one of my favourite books of all time.

Eala - I actually just listened to Neverwhere (I wrote the article before I picked that one up) and I can't say it changed my opinion. The production was good but the story really didn't capture me. I'll take your advice and give Sandman a try though, and maybe Good Omens too. Perhaps one of them will sway my opinion!

At the end of the day it may just be that Gaiman isn't ever going to be for you. It'd be boring if we all liked the same things, after all ;)

I also liked the Graveyard Book and of course also Neverwhere. I didn't read or watch or hear anything else by him yet.

Eala- you're probably right, but I feel like a traitor to the genre!

Not at all. There are a fair few fantasy "masters" whose work I can't stand

It's ok, I feel the same way about the Lord of The Rings... There are just too many descriptions and it's really not my cup of tea. But Gayman I LOVE in all the ways that my soul can accept beauty in writing. It's all good - clearly I was right all along and he writes JUST for me. And maybe Toral, since he shares my obsessions (he also introduced me to Gayman)...

But..if you just spend 2 minutes listening my absolute favorite by Gayman: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH4lyJWa_84

... although... I read it better than he does :)

Sandman was my introduction to Neil Gaimon, and I thought it was excellent. Encouraged by that, I tried 'Books of Magic' and they remain one of my favourites to this day - way better than Harry Potter (although please note that I don't dislike HP)!!
Stardust ranks amongst my favourite films.
And Good Omens is one of the best comedies I have ever read!
