Hiring: Welcoming Committee Staff
Hello everyone! It's that time of the year again. I just wanted to say thank you to all the current Welcoming Committee staff. Anarie de'Thain, Leo Kian, Luna Morn, Ahmyra al'Ruley, and Kveldolf Tikvah--you rock!
:grouphug Thank you for what you do and do so well!
The next term of the Welcoming Committee is July 1st through December 31st, ending concurrently with the mayor's end of term. I am hoping to make decisions on this position and bring folks on for training toward the end of June, so if you apply, please expect to come on a little early to get situated. This is the last Welcoming Committee before the end of the mayor term, so let's make it a good one. :evil
I'm happy to report that our excellent higher-ups have approved the current set-up of the staff's specializations to remain permanent through the next term. However, there will be one change: The position of Renaissance Woman/Man will be renamed "City Architect" and focus on assisting with, and running events for, citizens and other frequenters of City Hall. The job description for this specialization was a bit nebulous in the past, and this will hopefully bring this position's responsibilities into focus.
About the WC Specializations:
The official Welcoming Committee consists of 5 members: 2 Greeters, 1 Scribe, and 2 City Architects.
Greeters will be primarily responsible for greeting visitors and returning members in the Introduction Forum. They will post in each new thread in that forum and post a visitor message on the new user's profile. Greeters are also responsible for reporting back when a person is greeted by posting in a thread. As a stretch goal, members in this position will help double-check requirements these members need to meet to become a full member, and will record data in a Google Drive document (like an Excel Spreadsheet). In general, Greeters give a warm welcome and offer (and answer) any questions new members might have, (such as questions on how to apply to become a citizen, add an avatar to their profile, and send a visitor messages). This is a great position for new members who want to help others with things they just learned!
The Scribe's responsibilities are twofold: first the Scribe will maintain the overall Google Drive spreadsheet of the active visitors and track their credentials toward becoming a citizen as they move through the process. Luna's done an amazing job in this position verifying to see if each visitor has been greeted and assisting others with keeping this spreadsheet up to date too, so I hope the next Scribe is interested in helping out with that as well. The second responsibility of the Scribe is to assist with keeping the first post of project threads in the Welcoming Committee forum up-to-date. S/he will have mod powers to add to-do lists, summarize and post minutes, and edit the mayor's posts (and others if applicable). Be good, and don't abuse this, future Scribe! :nono
Finally the City Architects will assist by either running their own project or assisting with the projects of the mayor, by planning, executing, publicizing, and keeping records of events in City Hall for citizens and other frequenters of the forum (it depends on how ambitious you are). This may involve large projects, such as running the Citizen Class, but it may also include small projects, like keeping an eye on a festival thread that is stickied for a week. Members who feel they possess a creative spark would enjoy this position.
About the Welcoming Committee Forum:
These are all official staff positions, but as a heads up, there are other volunteers who operate within the forum. If you ask any staff or volunteer currently within the team, you will know that this branch of the Membership Department is extremely fresh and democratic. Our forum is like a thought cloud, and everyone contributes until someone has an idea that they run off with, faster than a strike of lightning. If you only have a little time to check in with the Boards, you have a place on this team. If you have grandiose ideas on a big event you want to plan, and pour hours into it to make something beautiful, you have a place on this team. If you are passionate about helping new members get oriented to the site, or you just love talking to new people and learning more about them, you have a place on this team.
I am committed to helping you improve your skills, grow as an administrator on both the TarValon.Net, and in your personal life. I want to hear your ideas, listen to what you have to say, and consider and try to implement changes you suggest. I want you to do the good work you feel comfortable doing, and I can say with confidence we have a great place set up to use as a workshop. You are welcome here.
Requirements:
- Be a full member of the site - (i.e. not a visitor)
- Be reasonably active - You should be willing to check in and/or post every 3 or so days. Leave of Absences are common place, so if you have to disappear for a week or more, don't worry, just give a heads up.
- Have an email address you are willing to share with other staff and volunteers. (If you feel uncomfortable using your primary email, why not create a faux-email whose only use is for this position?)
- Be able to meet for training - I'd like to hold a one-time get-together either on Skype or IRC before your term starts on July 1st since we have a lot going on, and I want to make sure you have the tools you need for success! I'm up to using your preferred meeting methods, (for example I'll download Vent and meet you on there if you prefer, for example,) but at the very least you should be open to getting on IRC for an hour some weekend this June so I can give you a run down of your position.
- There are other opportunities for Skype calls in this position, as we get together sometimes and just hang out.
- Not a requirement, but those who use Google Drive, have a gmail, or use Google Hangouts (chat software) are especially coveted in this position, since those are my favorites. :shifty Not a requirement--just a plus!
- I encourage those with big ideas to join this team. Consider that a challenge.
Please send me an email to mayor@tarvalon.net, keeper@tarvalon.net, and membership@tarvalon.net. In the body of your email, list what specialization(s) you are interested in applying for, provide the email you would like to use for forum correspondence, and share your Skype handle (if any). I'd also like you to share why you would like to apply to the Welcoming Committee. Such an explanation may include, but is not limited to: other positions or volunteering you've done on or off the site, your experience when you joined, changes you'd like to make, events you'd like to run, your ambitions, and why you're awesome.
*I will be accepting applications until June 17th--2 weeks from today. If you have any questions, please direct them to mayor@tarvalon.net. Good luck! I'm looking forward to working with you.
