Hi, am posting this in new readers as although I'm on a reread it's been soooo long (decades!) it all feels new to me in many ways!

Does anyone else on here listen to the audiobook versions? I've been reading at night, and listening to a chapter or two each day when I walk the dog, it's a really nice mix ❤️ For EotW I listened to the old audiobook version, but now I'm on tGH I'm on the new Pike version and it's a lot of fun 😁❤️ Really brings it to life 🏆

I'm a big fan of the audio books. They are my "comfort listens" for when I need a tried and true story. I've been meaning to try the new Pike version - does it sound significantly different?

I've listened to Reading/Kramer version a couple of times. I'm gonna try Pike's version on my next listen. What I've read is that she immitates the other actor's speech, gives the Seanchan a clear Texan drawl, and that the performance is really well done. I think most of that was from the chat about it on Mastodon. @Viktara Fen, was it you talking about this? Or @Delara Morellin? I can't remember

I haven’t listened to Pike read the second book yet, but I loved listening to her read the first. I love the Reading/Kramer version too, and I think they both have their pros and cons. Honestly I couldn’t pick a favorite. I’ve listened to the books so many times that the Reading/Kramer feels like home. They are amazing narrators and very relaxing to listen to. Pike on the other hand, is an actor and she reads it like one. She adds more feeling to the story, but I think she is a little harder to listen to sometimes. One of the highlights of the Pikes version of EotW for me was Moiraine’s Manetheren speech. It was good with the other two, but she really just held me spell bound. I am looking forward to listening to her read the second one too.

I've only listened to the first one in original format so far, but you're right it's super relaxing! Sometimes that's a problem for me as I have a tendency to fall asleep when listening to books 🤣

I know I was part of that conversation, though not the only one!

Sorry for the double-post, but I figured I'd share this fun video Dusty Wheel just shared on YouTube, in which Rosamund Pike talks about her methods and experiences recording the audiobooks.

I enjoy the audiobooks, and I especially like to turn them on when I have work to do that doesn't require much in the way of thinking, or when I'm driving long distances. On the way to Anni this year, I finished up the Pike EotW, then switched to Livingston's new Origins of the Wheel of Time. On the way back I got a third to halfway through the Pike TGH.

I kind of admire all of you for your ability to retain information obtained through listening. :look: I don't have trouble focusing while I listen, but I find that the content just seeps out of my brain a lot more quickly and easily if I don't have any visuals to attach to it. I've listened to a handful of audio books, podcasts, and just random YouTube videos, and I've found that I have to listen significantly many more times than reading with my eyes in order to actually remember anything.

Like you, I switched off between reading and listening to the Reading/Kramer audiobooks for my last re-read. I finished that in 2020, before season 1 of the show or the Pike audiobooks came out. I started listening to the Pike version of EotW earlier this year, but found I wasn't quite ready for another re-read yet.

I love switching between reading and listening! Because I tend to skim characters' names when I'm reading, I have a tendency to get confused about who is doing what. Listening helps me keep characters straight in my head (even when name pronunciation  switches from time to time).

I've not tried audio books. Where do you all get them?
I was able to find them in my library through the Libby app, although there was a long wait for them each time. If you'd like to buy them but don't want to shell out $50+ for each audiobook, you can also buy them through and Audible or Libro.fm subscription.

Personally, I use Libro.fm. It's $15/month (I believe) and you get a credit for one free audiobook a month. Credits don't expire. So when I remember I go into Libro.fm and snag the next WoT audiobook. I've gotten up to A Crown of Swords that way.

I use Libby too 🏆 And Kobo's audiobook service for when I can't borrow what I need, purely because it's cheaper than Audible (and they look after their staff and authors too ❤️) I've not heard of Libro I'll have to check them out 👍

Soooo different! Worlds apart! I like both styles though, for different reasons ❤️ Pike gives it some serious welly, which is fun, but it can get a bit much 🤣

I struggle with this too sometimes, but reading the book alongside helps too - like today I missed some bits while out walking (my dog was being an arse) so I'll go back over a bit with my book tonight. It helps that the stories are familiar to me, even after a good few years, I don't think it'd work for me as my first dip into WoT now I come to think of it!

Ooh. I've not heard of Kobo. I'll have to check them out if Libro.fm ever fails me! With Libro, you can designate a local bookstore for them to donate to every time you buy an audiobook, including when you use your credits. I love that they let me support smaller bookstores.

I started listening to the Reading/Kramer version, I love being able to change between reading at home and listening in the car. I really enjoy their version, though at first I really had to get used to Kramer's accent haha. I'm currently on book 8 there in my first read.
Meanwhile I got super excited when I found out Pike recorded the first books, so now I am actually listening to her version on the go (its a good catch up, I have now realised I had forgotten so many things already). I really love how she gives each person their own voice/character, and I feel like she really puts her soul into it. It's very clear she is an actress!

I was also a part of this conversation, and this conversation is what got me into listening it :pleased-1:
