My name mostly comes from laziness. Dreia is a shortened version of my RL name and Raieese comes from my sister who joined the site before me. :look:

When I was about 12, I did a lot of writing, but I hated how my name Kaitlyn, looked on paper. I came up with the pen name, Analiese Sinclaer because there was this really cool older girl that came down from New York for the summer who was always really nice to me, and her name was Analiese. I picked Sinclaer because it sounded good with Analiese, but I changed the spelling, because I've always liked the look of ae words. When I got here, the rules said I would need a unique first and last name, so I dug out my old pen name, and neither were taken, so they became my name. I now answer to Ana faster than I do to any variation of Kaitlyn.

I Googled a WoT name generator and just kept telling it to come up with names until I found one I liked. I chose Alenya first and went through a few pages of last names before settling on one I liked. I have a thing about syllables and names sounding right together. Choosing names for my kids was super hard, especially since they also have to sound good when you yell their full names when they're in trouble. Lol

As I mentioned in my intro thread (where there is tea and books and flowers and super-nice people in abundance!) I designed my name along Cairhienin-ish lines because I am very fond of Moiraine. Not mentioned there, I also have substantial soft spots for Daigian and Caraline (I'm a minor and supporting characters kind of person).

As for how I got to these specific names...'Arvaignin' involved running parts of my real name through Latin about a year or so ago, mangling those into an email address, and then, when I decided to visit the City, mangling *that* yet further into something that sounded surname-ish. 'Tatiane' has less direct personal significance; I first read the name 'Tatiana' in "The Royal Diaries: Anastasia: the Last Grand Duchess" as a child (does anyone else remember The Royal Diaries? They were Dear America spinoffs, and my local Sam's Club carrying "Elizabeth: Red Rose of the House of Tudor" is the event which I hold mostly responsible for me falling in love with European history) and thought it was the most beautiful name in the world. I still find it uncommonly lovely in sound, which is how it got assigned to a character I play in a non-WoT-related roleplaying game. There are a few names, curiously overlapping in frequency between Cairhien and the Aiel, which seem to be essentially RL names with a few vowels switched, so 'Tatiane' seemed like a natural adaptation for WoT purposes (or at least an acceptable one, after I decided that 'Tateane' didn't look quite right to me on screen).

...Well, that got long. Basically, though, I just think 'Tatiana' is a really pretty name, and I've spent a few years trying to learn Russian and pretending to be a teenaged witch called Tatiana on another website, so I've already gotten used to answering to Tatiana and its diminutives in chats often enough that I reckon 'Tatiane' will be easier than many names to look at and realize "oh yes, they're talking about me!"

Oh this is a good thread I hadn't seen. :)

I spent days puzzling over my name, I intended to use a permutation of one of the names I've used before (in World of Warcraft I'm Rhii, and I use varieties of that name mostly everywhere on the internet.) But I couldn't figure out how to make it sound WOTish, so at the last minute I just punched in Jocasta, and I'm not unhappy with that. Jocasta (or Iokaste) is Oedipus's mother... eep! But it's also so pretty, and it sounds so Aes Sedai to me.

Braithe is a name I've used in Roleplaying games, it's derived from "braith" which is a Welsh word for "freckles". It's also the name of that bossy kid in Skyrim at Whiterun. I like spunky girl children.

Yes!! I've read all of them and I'm slowly collecting them as well. Elizabeth was the first one I read and it also holds a special place in my heart. Anastasia was the second. Also they definitely made me fall in love with history as well.

I remember those Royal Diaries, although I preferred the Dear America books!

I don't remember when I discovered Dear America itself, Roheryn Sedai, but I did amass a good collection of those as well! Only for the longest time I didn't quite realize they were fiction, and thus in retrospect may have made a bit of a fool of myself in fourth grade....

I spent days puzzling over my name,

I relate to this. I almost joined TV once a few years ago, but couldn't think of a name! Jocasta is a beautiful name, despite certain...ahem...associations.

Eee, what were the odds of meeting someone else for whom Elizabeth was the grateway drug? Well-met!

When I was younger I loved watching the animated Prince Valiant (I loved everything Arthurian that I could find) on Family Channel. The title character's friend, a humble woodsman was named "Arn". Also, around that time I would get Disney Adventure magazine (I think they were called :scratch ) and in one issue there was a medieval story with knights n'such and a squire or page with the name "Arn" again. I liked the characters in both of those tales, and I guess the name has just hovered around in my mind since.

Oakenskye came about because I had been reading Tolkien just before getting into WoT and was thinking "Oakenshield". But I didn't want such a direct name pull, so then got thinking about what I wanted in a name. I liked the "Oaken" part of the name better because I've always liked the woods and nature, and also it just said "strength" to me.
I consider freedom an especially important thing, so that's where 'sky' came from. Then I recalled my mother had a First Nation's friend at one time who spelled her name "Skye" so I went with that spelling and tossed it all together. :beer

Coming back around to Arthurian related things, my avatar comes from the cover of a book titled, 'Lancelot Du Lethe" that was on my shelf and I just really liked the art. I still really like it, there's so much digital art everywhere you look these days, that actual painted art has started to feel rare.
