Who do you think is the best of the Great Captains?
    Pedron Niall.
    Davram Bashere.
    Rodel Ilturdale.
    Gareth Bryne.
    Agelmar Jagad,

I would go for Rodel, simply because we have seen so much more of him than any of the other captains in action.

    What are your thoughts?

I agree with you. His battle plans in the books were developed much more than any of the other great captains. One of them may be better, but we have not seen that yet.

On a side note, if I could write in a vote, Matrim Bloody Cauthon. I know he is not one of the great captains, but he probably better than any two of them combined.

I voted Jagad, we haven't seen him in action but he has been doing what Iturdale did at Maradon for his whole life. Davram the same obviously but I think Jagad would be slightly better :p

As for Mat, well he's cheating having all of those memories :p

i went with Gareth Bryne just from the little i have seen of him in the books i think he could be a one man wrecking crew .but i think galad or his borther could easily top the list of great captains

That. We don't really have that much to compare him to, since we hardly saw the others, so he's the obviouse choice :p

I agree, the Wolf seems the best choice. Granted, they're all GREAT. But as for military strategy, from what we've seen, he seems to be the best. He's extremely adaptable.

Bryne seems to be better at politics, as does Agelmar (though the politics of the two countries are probably quite different). Bashere is good at his job, but it doesn't seem like he ever really does anything particularly clever, novel, or unique. He just sets up fights. As for Niall...wait, why was he a great captain again?

I think they said it in one of the books, didn't they? He won... something against... someone... Sometime. I remember that he was described as a very good general for winning some wars or something, though I can't remember in which book it was described. I think it was Galad who said so in one of the very first books.

You're thinking of the Whitecloak War I think Aulrick? He captured Mattin Stepaneos. I think he did rather well fighting against the combined forces of Illian, Murandy and Altara so that's why he's ranked amongst the Greats

Going with Bryne. Aside from just being a great character in the books, he's cool enough for an artist to base his likeness on Sean Connery.

How did Doctah Jones Sr. really take down that Nazi plane? He threw birds at it with the One Power.

I voted Gareth because Venric said Sean Connery. :p

i wonder who is gona play Agelmar in the films... anyways blah.. .Agelmar is a national leader, we have not seen him in a fight, but hes a poet, hes got a huge army combined force, although he has seemingly abandoned his country their is the off chance his land is actually still holding off the army's, and while we have seen the trollocs beat up his army in the first book... i do not know hes constantly tested arguably, and yet so far he has not wasted any men killing other men, that is a pretty big plus lol... although he was plotting to kill Rand if he was not up to legendary status to survive and win the last battle.. .sooooo I do not know

Funny, Sean Connery is not at all how I imagined Bryne really. I imagined him...thinner, and older looking (whiter hair). Strong, to be sure, but not big and gruff. Still, I suppose it does fit.

From the above I would go with Ituralde.

But lets be honest - Mat can beat all the five combined, even if they have more army, supplies and arrows than him.

I've got to go with Bashere because he is the only one to have the foresight to join with Rand (other then Mat and Rhuarc) without out being in an unfavourable position or "taveren forced" (Intrudale). He has the same experience as Jagad by being a borderland general, which means he is also at least as good as Itrudale, and like others have said Bryne seems better at politics and disputes between men. Oh and Niall never really did do anything so yeah.

I had to vote Davram because I believe practice makes perfect, and he being from the north Im sure he's had plenty of practice. I understand that Ituralde is from the north too but for some reason I lean a little more towards Davram. I think it might be because he's not pure "Captain", he has experience in politics as well, being related to the Queen and all. In short I feel Davram possesses the best of Gareth combined with the best of Ituralde. Battle hardened and socialy honed.

  18. I vote Ilturdale also. He had a continious fight for the Almoth Plain before the Seanchan showed up, and he has been the only of the captains to have some success against the Seanchan.

    Mat wins.

But yeah, Ituralde is the only one of the five who has actually done something creative and sneaky and epic. I'm sure the others are good and all, but from what we've seen of them, they really haven't done anything special -- in fact I think Rand makes all Bashere's battle plans, or at least the Aiel clan leaders do, and Egwene came up with all Bryne's tactical stuff. I mean, yes, they can train people and dig potty trenches and have tents and stuff but IMO if Gawyn can think of it, anyone can think of it. :look

Maybe Gareth? He had to have done something to earn his ranking
