I mean, I'm sure we can find a different epithet. Delusional Dipshits? Pedantic Pauldron Pissants?

Here's a snippet from an interview with the costume designer, Isis Mussenden. It's hosted by Gold Derby senior editor Christopher Rosen. I've edited it for clarity because the original is very conversational with filler sounds/words and repeated phrases as the thoughts start to form.

Rosen: In the show, what was the one most exciting costume for you to bring to fruition? Or was there anything that you were really excited that this paid off so well in the final version?

Mussenden: ... One of the groups, it's actually an army, is called the Whitecloaks. It's a little controversial, the Whitecloaks, because you're not really sure if they're good or evil. They think they're good, are they good? We don't know. They wear white in the forest and they kind of don't really battle well, and they're zealots, and they're a bit righteous, and they're witch hunters. And so it was a real mix and mash of different ideas of what the Whitecloaks were.

And then, cloaks, and so then we have white cloaks, that's kind of like the knights of templars. I didn't want to shroud them in cloaks, even though I feel they're a little Klan-ish, I didn't want it to look like the Klan. So it was a real tricky one, we went though a lot of versions, a lot of versions. So I ended up pudding a cloak and a cape together, kind of a mantle-cape, to create this because they are on the horses and you could see them move as they were riding their horses. And a little ecclesiastic garb because they're a little bit of religious. They call themselves the Children of the Light. Whitecloaks is actually a derogatory name for them.

And then we took 380 meters of this fabric, because white was just too white, and we lightly printed chain mail on them. All the fabric is printed in chain mail. They're not wearing chain mail, because they're not battling. They're wearing a little bit of armor, not full armor, that could come maybe another time. When they're all in the forest and they're all around, and they came out on their horses it was quite striking, so I was very happy with that.

Oh that is just perfect. Its not their battle armour but they still make sure it has chain mail printed onto it!

I didn't really see it when I was watching the show, but I did see a pattern in some of the stills that have been released.

Edit: screencap from the show

Which part, exactly? The appearance, or the way to achieve that effect on fabric, or?

That effect could be achieved with Renaissance-era textile technology; "printing" it is just fast and cheap. It's becoming an incredibly popular way for people to get unique fabrics, especially during the pandemic when making international trips everywhere is ... difficult.

I am always impressed when an actor plays someone that I just cannot stand (umbridge) Abdul Salis playing Valda does that perfectly.

I pretty much hated him straight away…and I like that.

Yes- he did an amazing job. Not easy to portray that almost immediately.
