Cool! Happy you can join! The first part of the read doesn't take to long, I'm not that fast of a reader and I'll beat the date:p

I just have to be mindful to read carefully and to actually comprehend ... I tend to form an overall picture from .. not really skimming... I don't know. I can see the big picture but I end up missing a lot of the smaller details and nuances. So with this reread I am really trying to read carefully and mindfully. :p

OK. I've updated my list of notes on the first page. One of the things that have me the most curious are Gavilar's dark sphere that he gives to Szeth before he dies (Szeth has hidden it somewhere in Jah Kaved so that his masters can't take it from him). Anyone have any ideas on what that could be?

Yay, great notes Eluial! I wonder about the dark sphere / Smokestone too, but no ideas.

I've now finished chapter 11 Droplets, and had totally forgotten these:

-Shallan has a shardblade
-the significance (supposed) of her older brother Helaran. He's supposed to be dead (Shallan's father proclaimed so), but I'm sure he is not, and will reappear later. (Or if he's really dead he could be the Hommage à Asmo)
-I had also forgotten how much I *hated* the Brother Kabsal character...

About the characters... Shallan seems a bit odd to me. She's frequently described as shy, sheltered, prudish, and even timid. But still she kind of becomes mouthy very easily, after just a little encouragement. With the sailors it's understandable, she's been with them for months now, but with Brother Kabsal and Jasnah Kholin, too? They're (at least now when she's just met them) very big authorities to her, after all. Renowned scholar, the King's sister and heretic plus a religious authority.

I'm not saying that shy people can't be witty or sarcastic, but I'm not entirely sure if it's credible that she blurts out so easily. I dunno. I love her dedication, and her comments too but right now she seems a very odd character. I think if she'd just think the sarcastic comments (at first with new people anyway) it would be more credible. What do you all think?

More character thoughts later. :)

I just finished the Mistborn Trilogy, and though I am also reading Big Pharma, the Mark of Athena and Oxygen, I will probably start my re-read today or tomorrow

Glad to have you in on this Toral Gaidin!

Regarding the sphere, I'm also wondering how Gavilar received the sphere. Was it found recently or has it been passed down to him? Will where/who he received it from play a role the future?

I understand what your saying about Shallan, Taika Sedai. She does make me laugh though.

Yeah, I was wracking my brain trying to remember how Shallan got her blade. I'm almost certain we're told in this book, and that it was something pretty scarring/bad. Like, she killed her mom and took it from her or something. Gah! Can't remember.

And yeah, I'm getting more and more curious and Helaran as well. Interesting thought about the Asmo connection. Do we learn a little more about the circumstances surrounding his disappearance in this book?

Not her mom, her dad. But I don't remember if the shardblade was originally his. Probably.

About Helaran. I've completely forgotten if we have some more info about him in The Way of Kings. I have a feeling that it remains a mystery, but it also could be that it's not very significant, and that's why I've forgotten. Or then it could be very significant and I've just forgotten.

Taika Sedai, you absolutely hit the nail on the head! I asked Brandon (at the Seattle book signing tonight) about the Asmo connection and whether it was Shallan's brother (expecting to get RAFO'd) but he said it is.

He said he didn't intentionally write it that way, but that's how it sort of developed, and that in the upcoming book we'll learn a whole lot more about Shallan's family and what is going on with them.

Do we learn more about Shallan's oldest brother Helaran who disappeared?

I called it! Well I was thinking it was anyone who died or disppeared  Good job El! I'm surprised he told, usually he says "RAFO", so I've read anyway.

Eluial it's awesome how you so nonchalantly said 'I asked Brandon'...nice!
Lol, well, it's really because he's so nonchalant and cool with fans. It was my first time meeting him and I was fairly nervous but he was really nice and chatty and welcoming so it made me feel a lot more comfortable with him.

There was such a large crowd in Portland. We didn't get out until 11:30pm, and they were nowhere near done when we left. And yeah, he was super nice. Brandon Sanderson is an exemplar in the author-mixing-with-fans situation, whether online or offline.

Ah, sometimes I'm so jealous. :( I never get to these book signings...

But anyway. Renarin! I just started chapter 12, and I had forgotten how I adore Dalinar Kholin's younger son! :joy

I mentioned this earlier, but did anyone notice the map of Roshar looks like a satellite image of a hurricane? Interlude 1-1 talks about Purelake having mild weather compared to the rest of Roshar, just like the eye of a hurricane is calm.

I just thought it was interesting.
