Yeah, as I get older, Kelsiers attitude gets more and more annoying. He tries hard, but his flaws, hatred for the nobility especially is crippling him..

He has everything planned out and is so empathetic to everyone, but his empathy for the human race stops short at the nobles. It does get frustrating.

 

[Ignis al'Caleum]

That great flaw though is what makes Kelsier a very believable character, I think.

Agreed, and a much more interesting one, really. He has a lot of depth to him.

I'm surprised that this read I also feel very differently about Kel. I was more sympathetic to his character and his decisions the first time I read it, but now he seems pretty sociopathic to me.

Yes! Same. Although. I can't say I don't sympathize with him, honestly. Part of me is annoyed with Vin for not hating nobles more.

I think Vin has the ability to see more gray than Kelsier does. Kel sees things in black and white.

Vin had to see in a very limited space in order to survive.

Yeah, Vin hates the government, with obligators and Inquisitors, but she has no real hate for the nobility. Mainly because she don't really know all that much about them...

True, she didn't have that much personal one-on-one interaction with them the way Kelsier did. I think they were just so "other" to her. Her main life lesson up until the start of Mistborn had been "this is a threat, run away from this threat, do not interact with this threat."

Well that's the thing, I think. He's not an "old dude" by MY standards, and I have a bad habit of self-inserting so I didn't really internalize that Vin is like.... 16?

I didn't realize she was so young until the end. I don't think he states her age until way later.

Also re: Kelsier and his attitude, I was quite shocked by

how many people he killed. Just disposing of nobles because it furthered his cause.

I believe it's stated early on in passing that she's fifteen at the beginning of Mistborn. She turns throughout the course of the novel. I could be wrong on that - but at the very least she's 16 for the majority of the first book - if not the whole thing.

Yeah he mentions her age at the very beginning, but it's definitely in passing and not really highlighted much. I missed it the first time.
