I was trying to figure it out the whole book. The reveal was insane!!
Ahhhhh I can't wait for it then.
It really is. When I type up my notes from this last week, you'll see I have many notes related to that.
Notes for ch. 12-19:
Sazed leaves his copperminds between two boulders when he enters the Conventical of Seran. I realize he wants to keep them safe, but I couldn't help thinking that leaving them just sitting there wasn't exactly safe either. (though I realize it's a secluded area so it's very unlikely anyone would stumble upon them)
"Kelsier, the Survivor of Hathsin. Even his handwriting is legendary." Poor Elend
Elend doubted Vin's report about the mist spirit, which makes her reticent to tell him about her latest sightings. She doesn't want him to make fun of her.
Even before she realizes what the Deepness is, Vin starts to worry about the possibility of the Deepness returning.
I love Sazed. Even before the Collapse, he has a separate set of copperminds for storage and passing along knowledge and one for use. He doesn't just want to store the knowledge, but apply it.
I love Elend's excitement when he realizes that Vin is doing research on purpose.
Zane thinks they might have atium at first, since he sees Vin using it when fighting Cett's assassins. They're lucky that Zane saw that. I mean, they realize pretty shortly that they don't have an atium stash, but it lets Straff be uncertain for longer.
Book 3 (I think) spoilers:
We get hints about the truth of the Deepness. The mists kill some of the people, leave others alone, and hurt some people and leave them alive.
Realizing that OreSeur was the impostor reminded me why I was confused when the book started and OreSeur was following Vin around. I remembered it being TenSoon who had the dog body and I thought my memory was just bad. Apparently I just didn't remember OreSeur 'cause he's not in the book much before he gets replaced!
'OreSeur': "Be warned, however - he could be anyone. My kind are very skilled." Is this TenSoon trying to warn Vin about himself?
'OreSeur' doesn't remember the information from the logbook, since he's already TenSoon. He brushes it off when Vin asks if he remembers, but it's clear that he's acting. (at least in hindsight)
'OreSeur' starts acting friendly and making jokes. We're made to think it's because Vin's being nicer to him and I'm sure that's part of it... but also TenSoon might just be a friendlier kandra. I wonder if the real OreSeur would've ever come around to her like TenSoon does.
Zane talks about their spy: "He's woried that they might suspect him." Is that TenSoon he's talking about? Is he really worried that people suspect him???
Notes for ch. 20-27:
Elend still says 'Now, see' a lot. That's a mannerism of his that Brandon Sanderson pointed out in the annotations and I can't stop noticing them now.
Vin notices how Breeze uses his Soothing to help his friends.
Twindyl's so calm suggesting that Elend kill himself if he realizes he's not the best man to be king.
Elend: "Vin isn't... like other women."
Twindyl: "I think that the more women you come to know, the more you'll find that statement applies to all of them."
As Brandon Sanderson mentioned in the annotations, Vin is starting to feel less secure in the mists. They're no longer where she can go for calm.
Elend thinks that Sazed removed his earrings to not tempt thieves, rather than realizing that they were Feruchemical.
Even with all that's happened, it's really easy for Elend and others to dismiss skaa fear of the mists as just superstition.
I really like Twindyl.
Awww, OreSeur seems disappointed when Vin mentions that she won't be bringing him along with her into Straff's camp.
A bit of foreshadowing to Elend's issues with the Assembly. He's a member of the Assembly himself, but he tells Dockson that he'll 'try and visit' when he gets back to the city.
Vin's a good actor!! (her act in Straff's camp) She even impresses Elend.
Straff openly admits to Elend that he had intended for the skaa rebellion to kill Elend when he left the city. Man, Straff....
Interesting. I'd forgotten that stars weren't visible in the Final Empire to most people.
Book 3 spoilers:
Kelsier told Vin to keep the earring her mother gave her as metal to push on in case of an emergency. Obviously there's another useful reason that she should keep it.
Spoilers related to the impostor:
Elend is happy that Vin's growing more attached to 'OreSeur'
'OreSeur' is 'helplng' Vin to uncover the impostor. Telling her that kandra can't use allomancy and can't be affected by allomancy. It does actually help a bit, at least, in that it lets her trust members of the crew.
Vin asks 'OreSeur' what his life was like before he was recruited by Kelsier. He doesn't want to answer... which is fitting for a kandra. But also convenient for him so he doesn't have to try to explain OreSeur's life based on his research.
Vin is surprised that 'OreSeur' isn't an expert on her past. She brushes it off, but it can be seen as a hint that he's the impostor.
I continue to wonder if the real OreSeur would've warmed up to Vin as TenSoon has. Taking initiative and helping her without direct orders.
'OreSeur' is able to make reference to Kelsier asking him to study all the Luthadel noblemen in preparation to play Renoux. He did his research!
Elend mentions that Straff always keeps a kandra (TenSoon). A small hint that he's the one who sent the kandra to infiltrate their crew.
TenSoon is doing his job and reporting what he hears to Straff. Even though he's obviously starting to befriend Vin, he's bound by his contract.
'OreSeur' is waiting for Elend and Vin to get back from the meeting with Straff. He's anxious to hear how it went, possibly. He knows he betrayed them, but also kinda likes Vin as a master.
Imposter spoilers since I just finished book one
So TenSoon is lying that those bones are only a few hours old since he's been there in the wolfhound body the whole time, right?
Whoops, Wednesday last week slipped by due to Thanksgiving. Finish up part 2 by this Wednesday! Then we start driving it home with one part per week for the next few weeks. Five and Six will be together since they are both short.
I am on Chapter 41.
With NaNoWriMo out of the way, I'll be starting on Hero of Ages soon.
(Kassina, your Bubbles and Plots sig with Alora just popped up on your rotation, and just....awwwww! )
I'm only a couple chapters from the end of Part 2 now, so I'm almost caught up. I don't understand/remember why the mist is killing people. I remember who the mist spirit is and I'm pretty sure I remember why it's appearing during the day but not the dead villagers.
The mist killing people is a "big" part of book 3...
Spoiler: Spoiler for why the mists make people sick
Why does it KILL people? I know that the people they make sick is the people who are mistings, the ones who can use atium being the ones who are sick the longest, but do we get an explanation to why some people are killed? Is that Ruin somehow?
I guess I'm not understanding why Preservation would want to make atium mistings.
Spoiler: Book Three Spoiler
Preservation isn’t making anyone Mistings. The ability is latent. Preservation is just snapping them so their abilities awaken.
Alright - I wasn’t able to sort out all my thoughts last time because of time...here’s more. The spoilers below contain major spoilers for Hero of Ages - do not open unless you’ve read it!
Spoiler: Major Spoilers for Book 3
People who are killed by the Mist are being indirectly killed by Preservation (it's important to say indirectly because Preservation is unable to kill). Those who die are those whose constitution cannot handle the process of snapping which is why it's generally the very old or young that die.
As for Atium Mistings: Atium is Ruin's body and that's why the atium mistings are important. They have the ability to burn Ruin's body, and this is what Preservation is trying to communicate to Elend and Vin.
Thank you Ignis, that makes a lot more sense now
No problem - I've read the series many, many times lol.
That's what I meant by making. Not too much of a difference.
Thanks for the explanation, I didn't think of that.
No problem. My apologies if I misunderstood Leira Sedai.
Oh it's ok, just clarifying what I meant No need to apologize, sorry if it sounded that way!
