On March 11, 2023 -- a Saturday! -- we will be hosting a "Job Fair" from 2PM-6PM EST. We are still finalizing details on what exactly this will look like, but our ultimate intent is to share information about open jobs, have Q&A time to find out what you would need to do if you wanted a particular job on the site, and have general catch-all TV.Net-job-related discussion.

This will be happening in Discord. We hope to see you there!

Time slots (Est):
2:00 - Online Events (Cordamora)
2:30 - Membership
3:00 - Officers
3:30 - Research and Records
4:00 - Technology
4:30 - Marketing
5:00 - Events & conferences
5:30 - Outreach

Just to be clear, this is for any member who has any desire to volunteer on the site. Whether you joined yesterday or have been around for 20 years. My personal goal is to also use this to set up mentoring for those who want to someday hold a specific role but don’t know how to become the best candidate.

Dying to someday be the Shatayan, or Amyrlin, this is for you. Want to be a local liaison, MoR, podcaster, or library editor, this is for you. Even if there is just one small thing you want to improve on the site but don’t know how to get involved…this is for you.

We will set up 30 minute time slots to focus on each department (more details to come) so if you have an itch to do tech, or want to help getting our name out there (marketing) you can pop in for those specific segments.

I updated the first post with this information, but we've broken the block into 30 minute segments for each department. The goal is to allow the directors and officers to give a little information about the department and currently open positions and then allow time for questions related to that department and roles. This also will allow anyone who has a specific department they REALLY want to volunteer in to narrow down the time they need to pop in to ask all their questions.

Tech is now hiring for some gatekeepers, so if you have any questions or want to learn more about it, definitely come visit me at the Fair!! :)

just my bad luck, I have been waiting for something like this for ages but now it's on a day I have to work...
I don't suppose you can record the sessions so we can listen to them afterwards if we can't make it?

There wasn't any ability to record the actual event, but I did take some notes that I'll be posting below. I also intend to work with the directors to do other department specific sessions on occasion so there will be other chances to learn about volunteer opportunities in the future. Dates and times still have to be determined.

NOTE: The information provided below is based on my understanding of discussions during the chat. There may be errors or misunderstandings on my part. I have presented this to the directors for comment as well so there may be edits to come.

General Questions/Answers:

  • Hiring posts are for “dream candidates”. All “requirements” are potentially negotiable. If you want the job, don’t let “I don’t have this one bullet” keep you from applying.
  • If you want to help out in a staff role, no need to wait for a job posting, just email the director and ask.
  • Best advice for applying for any admin, director, or officer roles is to present a plan or goal for the position. Know of a problem? Then explain how you would make that thing better.
  • The weekly time estimates in job posts can be daunting. These are usually conservative estimates and are not reflective of the time needed each and every week. This is a good question to ask if you’re unsure you have the time.

Online Events

  • Good starting point is volunteering for teams like Bel Tine and Shoaman.
  • Guilds, you can serve as a guild master.
  • Game Masters, chance to run live games like D&D, Mafia, etc.
Membership

  • Most membership positions are Senior Member/Membership group linked (Head of Ajah, Company Commander)
  • Mayor role is open to citizens as well as SMs but cannot be raised during tenure.
  • City Council is open to citizens as well and can be a good way for Citizens to get involved.
  • New Community Council has spots for all levels of membership.

Research and Records
  • Editing in the library is a good starting point.
  • Teaching in the classroom is also an easy way to share your special knowledge on any topic with others.
Technology

  • Gatekeeper role is easier than you think! Can you read a list and check boxes? You would be able to perform this job!

Marketing

  • Graphic Development – Designing and making graphics. I believe the Tower has a subscription to a software that makes it easier, and you don’t need your own Photoshop account!
  • Social Media team and manager – if you only have one social media platform that you want to keep up with, you can specialize! Scheduling the Social Media posts only takes an hour or so each week.
  • Podcast could use help with transcriptions. Software does initial talk to text but makes some amusing mistakes that need to be manually fixed.
Events

  • Conference Coordinator role is open! True requirements are limited primarily to setting up a presence at JCon or similar. Examples: Get us scheduled for a Merch table, arrange a tower toast.
  • Changes to the department and how events are going to be planned may open up opportunities for people who want to know more about what happens behind the scenes for event planning.
Outreach

  • Open to suggestions for outreach opportunities and/or volunteers to help with metrics and analysis.
  • Servant of All can be a good starting point for new people volunteering on the site.
  • Can also brainstorm ideas for site fundraiser themes and ideas for other non-profits we might do smaller fundraisers to support.
