So I finished reading the first book... and I've only read the first three chapters of the second book, "The Great Hunt", but i can't seem to be able to read the fourth chapter.

Help!

When I was reading the series, I had to take a break in between each book to read something else

Me too. Audiobooks really help with the slog. I'm currently stuck in a place called the Rahad in book 8, despite the audiobooks and being my 4th reread.

I've re-read the first 4 books maybe 5 times and I still haven't finished the series. Take a break and pick it back up when you're feeling it.

Honestly, I've been reading these books since 1997, and I have always struggled with the first handful of chapters in TGH, no matter how often I read the books. It's not that its boring or not engaging, but the pace just seems to drag for those first chapters, because a lot of it is set up, and it's obvious that it's set up, and I just get impatient and I stall out. Just muscle through, it starts picking up really soon and then its an adventure, I promise.

I will probably never finish the books, but I do recall the slog of the Great Hunt. I'll second the recommendation to give yourself breaks! The Rosamund Pike audiobooks are super engaging, too.

Sometimes, with the Wheel of Time, you just have to push through. Sometimes, it actually helped me to read the Chapter summary I was on to help encourage me to continue. Usually, there's a plot point listed that sparks something and I am more inspired to keep reading. I will say that the first few chapters are slow in a sense, but they also have very important plot points that have ripples throughout the series.

I'm hoping to buy the final book tomorrow... that way when I look upon it's cover, I'd be inspired to keep reading so that I can get to that point.

I got a big spoiler(totally my fault) and that kept me going because I was so curious when and how that would happen. I do not recommend doing the same though.

I didn't have trouble getting into TGH but I'm stubborn like that.

I think that in a sense, for me at least, the first book felt like it wrapped up this huge mystery. Not that we all didn't suspect Rand from the beginning, but the confirmation of it felt like a resolution. It felt like an ending, like "oh, we figured out that mystery, go us!"

But there were enough new mysteries to keep me interested and engaged. I had a whole new set of questions that needed answers.

The one that was always hardest for me to read through was Lord of Chaos (book six). The end was AMAZING but most of the rest was very... uggggghh for me. Not that it didn't have good content just maybe the pacing was off? I'm not sure. Just keep barreling through. You'll get to the amazing parts of TGH, I promise, just gotta make it through the beginning.

I've only read up until Crossroads of Twilight (book 10) but I'm on A Crown of Swords (book 7) right now. I'm so excited to be re-reading this series! I'm looking forward to getting to the "new to me" stuff. I've been spoiled a bit but mostly because I keep looking things up to quell my anxiety. "Does X get their due? They're a terrible person, do they get punished?" or "I need to know if this person dies. Not how, just if so I can stop my heart from freaking out." That kind of thing. Poor @Karassa Souladrin , she's the one I turn to a lot but sometimes I just don't want to bother her.
