Hmm really the rings and shawls are just symbolism. The real mark of the raising is the oaths. So do they really need anything else? Though tattoo might be cool. :look:

I think when you are raised to an shawl you are really pledging to a group of people and the shawl is simply how you make that apparent for all to see. Aes Sedai are typically strong and what to be noticed, rings are not as easily seen and thus are more useful for showing only when it best suits your purpose. The oaths however are a deeper mark pledging to the White Tower and the standards of the White Tower more akin to a tattoo.

Or a special necklace? "Raised to the Chain". I actually like that. The expression at least.
So if you get stilled would you be "off the chain" lolol

Maybe they will still use the phrase, but say shawls are an old tradition and no longer used.

I could see doing it as more of a stole than a shawl -- a narrow strip of fabric in the color of your Ajah that you drape around your neck and let hang down in front, a la what you see in the vestments for some Christian ministers. That lets you put the Flame of Tar Valon on the ends (where a Christian stole might have the cross) and also prominently display the color of your Ajah, while being a bit more portable and less likely to snag on things.

. . . and then stick the Amyrlin in a shawl instead, I guess.

being tattooed on the person,

:look: Uh - what do you do if whitecloaks are around???

Gee, now that I think about it, it seems like that fringed shawl situation might be really annoying? I bet RJ never tried to wear a fringed shawl for an extended period of time--that bad boy's gonna get snagged on EVERYTHING

The Aes Sedai only wear their shawls for formal events - so you essentially have to memorize which Aes Sedai is in which Ajah - it isnt outwardly recognizable in the books. Maybe they had an issue with that in the series?

Yes - Agree with @Alora Sionn Gaidin - that suggestion is off the chain!! :rofl

Honestly, I suspect it's the same thing you see in the art for the card game of Legend of the Five Rings. When your primary mode for communicating worldbuilding to the audience is visual, you have to lean on shorthands, of which getting everybody to dress in the color of their faction is a strong one. In reality, the people in L5R wouldn't all walk around in their clan colors all the time ("you may like green, but too bad, you're going to wear blue the rest of your life because you're in the Crane Clan -- but only light blue, mind you; we don't want someone mistaking you for a Crab"), but when you're making art for cards, color-coding is an effective way of signaling affinity at a glance. Similarly, although I can't see Aes Sedai wanting to be stuck in their Ajah color for literal centuries, on the screen that gets the point across waaaaaay faster than any amount of exposition would.

(Fanfic idea: the White Ajah holding a ceremony every year to honor the sister who invented the weave that keeps their dresses from getting stained.)

DANG IT I KNEW I SHOULD HAVE GONE WITH IT!!! There's nothing I love more than a ridiculous portmanteau, but I figured: no, I'm new here, let's not be QUITE so absurd yet

Don't worry, you'll soon discover how silly the rest of us are and feel at home to be as absurd as you like. Shawlternatives is a beauty

If you go up to "thread tools" just below the title (but to the far right) you should be able to change the name of the thread:p
