Moiraine talked about an Aes Sedai who came to her room as an Accepted to help her learn to channel, but instead beat her repeatedly with the Power until she panicked enough that she could do it.

That's straight out of New Spring. Elaida did that in the guise of helping her practice for the Raising test to the shawl.

I think there will be no Elaida. Moiraine probably talks about Cadsuane there, because we know that she will be in the show.

he end of the Eye of the World was a clusterf**k guys. As much as we all love the series, the ending of that book was... impossible to adapt. Full of plotlines that never went anywhere (the voice speaking over the battle?) and devices that never appear again (the untainted pool of Saidin?). It would have been a confusing (time consuming, expensive, impossible) mess, and people who hadn't read the books would have been incredibly lost. When I read the book I was incredibly lost. In fact, I'm not much less confused by the ending than I was when I first read it. So... we pretty much KNEW there would be major changes and the episode was just about what I expected (well not entirely, finding the Horn of Valere... under the floor in Fal Dara made me go WHAT?! but mostly). I was not at all surprised they cut Aginor and Balthamel and made the direct confrontation with Ishamael.

I wouldn't want them to fully show all the things at the end of the book, but they almost showed nothing. No real duel or battle. The effect of Rand using sa'angreal wasn't satisfactory, Dragon Reborn's power x 100 shouldn't look that weak. The book version of the ending confused people, yeah, but the show did the same but with no epicness, book was at least epic in that matter. All of my friends who didn't read the book didn't like the episode. They said it didn't feel like a season finale, except the opening scene with the Age of Legends and the ending scene with Seanchans.

Well, they've casted Natasha O'Keeffe but haven't said who she is playing yet. We've got two choices for her--Lanfear or Elaida.

Elaida is a HUGE player later on and the whole first book she's in Caemlyn until Elayne gets to the Tower. There's literally no reason to cast her yet.

Liandrin is vital to getting the girls to Falme, so she had to have more of a backstop instead of just randomly showing up and saying "OK, don't question me, come with me to Falme, shut up about it."

Clearly not ALL your friends. ;) I liked it. I actually really liked that the physical fight between Rand and Ishamael was minimized. We should (hopefully) see a much more physical duel between them with swords at the end of the Great Hunt plotline, and this one was definitely a psychological battle between them, a battle for Rand's soul right at the beginning. Changing up the format of the fight will keep it from feeling repetitive. I don't want it to be like Harry Potter where Rand just fights Voldemort at the end of every season. :P

I wish they could've done a longer episode for the finale. That I definitely do agree with, it all felt kind of rushed, but I know that wasn't really up to the show makers and there was SO much to show.

:love I said "All of my friends who didn't read the book" though, Jo. :shifty

I don't blame Rafe or someone spesific, probably the fault was on Amazon like 75% percent, like how Warner Bross literally ruined the Hobbit and Peter Jackson couldn't do anything (well, he should have quit but anyway). This show isn't bad, but they hyped us real for the finale; they showed us ballistas preparing for battle or such in the trailer. If you show us those weapons, at least be enough kind to use them, you know, like the Chekhov's gun principle. 'every element in a story must be necessary, and irrelevant elements should be removed. Elements should not appear to make "false promises" by never coming into play.' They should at least have known that simple thing.

Sorry for double posting:

Elaida is a HUGE player later on and the whole first book she's in Caemlyn until Elayne gets to the Tower. There's literally no reason to cast her yet.

They showed us Liandrin as a character who wants to increase her own power in the Tower and forms an opposition against the Amyrlin, at least this is what we understand from Alanna's quote to Moiraine. I would want to see Elaida in the show but I think they gave her main arc to Liandrin.

Yeah I think overall the show suffers from not having enough episodes, not having a long finale or opening episode, and Barney Harris not returning, which probably threw everything for a loop. And also, covid- didn't Rafe say a lot of budget was spent on covid safety measures?

Yeah, I can imagine that was a BIG CHUNK out of the budget.

Well, thankfully Season 2's budget will be higher.

Yes! I hope they will be able to do a lot of things with season 2 they didn't have the creative freedom/budget/time/ability to do with season 1.

I can understand 90% of the changes and understand that the first book was a mess at the end, even on fourth or fifth read.
I loved Joiya and how Fain took the horn and dagger now instead of next season.
I think the budget and Barney leaving were major reasons the finale was the way it was. I’m going to give them grace and let season two speak for itself.
All will be well.

Yeah, agreed. I guess where I am is: this was an enjoyable season of television even with the major challenges of a pandemic, serious budget constraints, and a major character leaving partway through. Did I love everything? No, but I understand that those major challenges were there. Did I love some things? Yes, I really did! So I'm gonna stick with it, and I'm already excited for season 2.

So I’m watching the cold open again.

And LTT wants “to do something that has never been done before. Cage The Dark One”

are they not doing The Bore?

It was a little weird she seemed to be aware of the possible Taint backlash too for what it’s worth. Why is she not helping? Also she calls him Dragon Reborn. So something funky there.

but at they really saying the Dark One is totally free? Surely somethings coming across wrong because that a hell of a change if so. More to be explained / shown later maybe? Seems weird so far.

Moiraine is not stilled. She's shielded with a knot.

Loial and Uno ain't dead. Rafe have confirmed he's not dead. And Uno is in season 2 as well. So I guess Nyn and Egwene comes in in season 2 and heal them.

Can't wait to see more of the Seanchan, even they have weird face paint :cheeseeni:

@Imzadi Hopewind In the watch party of Dusty Wheel, Brandon Sanderson said Moiraine is stilled. That could be because he's not allowed to say anything else, but I also got the impression from interviews with Rafe that she IS actually stilled (I won't say more here because there are potential spoilers for Season 2 in what I read).

The visual effect they used was the same as Logain's shielding, plus a flourish of the Power as if he were tying off a knot. My guess is that she's technically shielded, but the practical effect of having a strong saidin shield on you when there are currently no proficient good-guy saidin channelers is the same as if she were stilled.

However, it's possible that the method for severing was different in the Age of Legends. The books do describe it as similar to a shield but with a sharp edge. So maybe the visual effect of pulling the Power out of Logain's body was showing a comparatively crude modern method of gentling that differs from a refined AoL version.

Somebody might have already said this, but Ishy said something like "how does it feel to know it is there, but you can't quite touch it".

If she was stilled, it would be gone altogether, I would think.

Strictly speaking someone who is stilled can still sense the source

someone who is burned out can’t

  • The severing of a man from the True Source is now known as 'gentling'. He can still sense the Power, but is unable to touch saidin in any way. [...] The stilled woman, like the man who has been gentled, is cut off from the True Source, always tantalized by the sense of saidar, yet unable to touch or channel it.

  • The woman who is burned out can neither channel nor sense the Power
