From the explore tab interactive map:

"Cobbled together at the edge of a quarry, this place is, by every definition, a mining town."

I think this presentation of Thom fits the overall character of Thomdril Merillin: disgraced bard with warrants out for his arrest, fleeing a politically unstable situation in Caemlyn, dude who commits regicide a few times, mourning Owyn (that SONG tho!), and is capable of eventually becoming Moiraine's Warder and guards the entrance to Shayol Ghul in AMoL. In EotW he's just sorta cutely grouchy and stuck on himself? This guy is still pretty stuck on himself, but I think we get the bigger picture faster. This guy I'd be curious to see if he could survive a Fade. When I read EotW I was like "yeah that old guy is suuuuuper dead" but with this one I'd be unsure. He's just a more plausible fit for the eventual full character.

Ara, I don't think they ever actually say it's a mining town in the episode. Dana's speech talks about "digging in the dirt, until one day they cover you in it." So yeah, might not actually be mining at all.
In the episodes itself no. But in the trivia section for the episode (with prime X-ray) it states it's a mining town ...

I might have missed something but I have not seen Mat (or anyone else) use "blood and bloody ashes" or any of the other Wot cuss phrases, right?

Nope. That's another thing that's been bothering me and it seems like such an arbitrary, inexplicable change. :grumble I haven't heard them use a single curse like that. They've had phrases with the Light, which is great, but nothing else.

That and they just haven't been referring to Emond's Field as Emond's Field, but instead "Two Rivers". But they still mentioned Aemon in the Manetheren story Moiraine told them.

Also, Lan hasn't yet called Rand a sheepherder, which really needs to happen.

I was re-watching S1E3 tonight and me and my partner both noticed something just a little bit strange about the mining happening in Breen's Spring. A lot of what's getting examined and used in the background doesn't really feel like ore ... it looks like slag, or scrap. He's wondering if they're not "mining" so much as scavenging like Rey was doing to the fallen Star Destroyers in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Interesting theory!

Hmmm.

So, this is the historian in me going nuts now. There is a neat show on the BBC that does explore railroads (it's called Full Steam Ahead) and part of it explores how slate tiles are made. There's a ton of slag created in the process. We know that there are tiles used for roofs and such, so what if they are making those tiles in Breen's Spring?

Yeah they're using real world swear words in the show so far but none of the in-world ones. The references to Light seem to be the extent of it.

I can get behind the show not using Emond's Field because a common task in adaptation is to reduce the number of new names for an audience to learn. Just calling it the Two Rivers is a good efficient use of the dialogue.

I do want Lan to call Rand sheepherder once they're back together, too.

Just found an entry for Breen's Spring in the WoT Companion!

"A place in the western part of Andor, west of Carysford on the Caemlyn Road. Master Kinch told Mat and Rand that Morgase's Queen's Guard no longer went beyond Breen's Spring."

i noticed in the trivia somewhere that the Two Rivers was a region with four towns (including Emond’s Field) but it doesn’t seem like the show is always consistent with the trivia.

Yeah, the Two Rivers is the area, Emonds Field is just one of many villages there. Watch Hill, Deven Ride and Taren Ferry is other villages.

Okay, on my second rewatch now. I seem to be of the unpopular opinion that Barney Harris is amazing.
Overall opinions:
1) Casting is awesome all around
2) There’s nothing that’s been CHANGED so far that I can’t understand for the sake of translating to television or making character story arcs better
3) DID NOT like book Nynaeve, but absolutely love Zoe and her portrayal.
4) Lan is perfect in every way and there’s nothing you can say that will change my mind.
5) I do want more “sheepherder” and book-oriented swearing

I was re-watching some of the scenes a second time, and this time around I got proper tingles at the first time I get to hear someone in a show out loud refer to "the three-fold land" and actually say "May your soul find water and shade." I was never even a big Aiel person, but that's proper chills that is.

Would it be possible for major spoilers to be put into spoilers, or should I just stay out of this thread? I am not sure what the protocol is here.

What kind of spoilers do you mean? Since it's the third episode thread it makes sense to be able to discuss everything we've seen, and it's been marked as Book Spoilers?

I heard "Light" used at least once, I'll have to rewatch to find where. But I am missing the blood and bloody ashes, woolheaded, etc.
