I just think it was a bit weird that Lan introduced Moiraine like she was a wrestler about to put on a show. It gave me strong "anime cliche" vibes.

I don't know how I feel about this scene! I think it will feel more right in context, when we see it halfway through the first episode. The first time I watched it, I was worried it might be a bit... overdone? Specifically Moiraine and Lan's entrance and dialogue. But, my partner, who hasn't read the books, loved it. So, I wonder if my initial unease was more to do with it not matching the tone of Moiraine's introduction in the books. I rewatched it a few more times and I like it more each time I see it.

I kinda feel like we need a good short acronym for the bolded phrase, haha. my partner, who hasn't read the books, was unimpressed. I was like what? how? but his summary was: someone walks into an inn and wants a room for the night...okay... well, he still has to watch the show so maybe it's better in context. as for me, I also like it more each time I see it.

for some reason I'm getting strong lanfear and moghedien vibes from the other two. hmmm

ETA: That said, Meera Sya as Verin would be interesting if they're dropping the ageless thing entirely.

This sounds like Moiraine telling a story, maybe not the story of Manetheren, but describing what will happen if the boys do not come with her.

I can't wait :joy

I like how it seems women's visual Power manifestation is white and men's is black, showing the difference between saidin and saidar.

Yeah I mentioned elsewhere that I hope they explain early on that the difference is men/saidin vs women/saidar and not Good vs Evil or something like that, so that it does't confuse people :\

I really need a reread, but it was a tad overstated. I love the scene with a cosy Inn with tabac pipes. Then again it gave me LOTR vibes. Gandalf will walk in and hrpmm on his pipe.

One of the scenes with the Myrddraal also gave me LOTR vibes when the Ring Wraith is asking about the Shire and the Bagginses. It was a virtually identical scene.

Well Jordan and a lot of fantasy writers borrowed heavily from Tolkien world.
Good or bad, but certainly a compliment to Tolkien. Jordan did make his world his own, even with tropes and such.
Be great if they made a half decent game from it to.

The Eye of the World is basically beat for beat LotR, no way around that.

I just tell myself that LOTR is one of the many mythologies from our world that get remixed into the turning of the wheel we see in Wheel of Time.

Ngl I was trash talking EotW the whole time my first way through because I had just finished reading LotR so it was super fresh in my mind lol but I grew to love it when it became its own thing

Yeah I think EotW is intentionally responding to LotR, right? I mean, it's a hero's journey and all but it intentionally uproots the classic male guide with a female one, and then leans in to the innovative magic system and Buddhist framework for the worldbuilding. LotR is very much a linear worldview in which evil persists but will one day be conquered, and Frodo is kind of the negative inverse of a chosen one, where he actually has no great skills or powers other than his will to keep going.

Not disagreeing with what anyone's said previously, but I think Jordan was pretty open that his imagination was formed by the big fantasy works that came before and was actively in conversation with them.
